Filipino gymnast earns Olympic gold and a home.
Gymnast Carlos Yulo expressed his happiness after winning both gold and a house.
Carlos Yulo won more than just a gold medal when he edged reigning Olympic and world champion Artem Dolgopyat of Israel in the men's artistic gymnastics floor exercise final on Saturday.
He won a fully furnished house, too.
Dolgopyat, 24, came in second place with a score of 14.966, just narrowly losing to Yulo, who finished with a score of 15.000. Great Britain's Jake Jarman took the bronze with a score of 14.933.
An Aug. 1 statement from real estate corporation Megaworld revealed the incentive and prize.
In 2024, we will mark our 100th year of participating in the Olympic Games by honoring the exceptional competitive spirit of our latest Olympic gold medalist and welcoming them to McKinley Hill, as stated by Megaworld President Lourdes Gutierrez-Alfonso.
Taguig City, located in Metro Manila, is home to McKinley Hill, a township.
"A perfect home for Filipino champions who embody passion and excellence in all aspects of life," she stated.
The two-bedroom condominium is valued at 24 million pesos, equivalent to approximately $415,000, according to Megaworld.
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Romualdez Marcos of the Philippines and the country's government also recognized Yulo's efforts with kudos and a cash reward.
Carlos Yulo secured the Philippines' first GOLD medal in artistic gymnastics at the Paris 2024 Olympics, as Marcos announced on his Facebook page.
"Congratulations, Caloy! The entire country stands proud with you. I am confident that it will not be the last."
Multiple news outlets from the Philippines reported that the House of Representatives awarded Yulo 3 million Philippine pesos (about $51,900) for his gold medal.
Yulo's victory in gymnastics secured the first medal for the Philippines and was also the first Olympic gold medal for a Filipino male athlete. This was the second gold medal for the Philippines, with Hidilyn Diaz winning the women's 55-kilogram competition in Tokyo.
She, too, was awarded a house at the time.
Yulo expressed his gratitude for the medal and God after his win, stating that he felt overwhelmed but thankful for God's protection.
"He provided me with the fortitude to endure this type of presentation and excel in it."
Yulo, who has been training in Japan since 2017 as part of an Olympic Solidarity program, hopes that his victory will motivate others in the Philippines to pursue gymnastics.
He stated via Reuters that he hoped gymnastics in the country would increase in popularity.
"The people who helped me and my hard work led to my success. I am grateful for their contributions. Winning gold and a house is a testament to their support."
Yulo has a chance to win another gold medal Sunday after qualifying in sixth place for the vault apparatus final.
