Ed Reed, a Hall of Famer and Ravens legend, accepts a coaching position at an Atlanta-area high school in a surprising move.
Edward Reed, Reed's son, is a two-way star at the Georgia high school.
Ed Reed, in his 11 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, consistently instilled fear in opposing quarterbacks.
After the 2012 season, the ball-hawking safety left Baltimore and played for the Houston Texans in 2013. He ended his storied NFL career with the New York Jets in 2019, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the same year.
Reed shifted his focus to coaching after his playing career ended. He joined the Buffalo Bills coaching staff in 2016 and spent three seasons in a support staff role with the Miami Hurricanes football program.
Reed has started a new chapter in his coaching career as the offensive coordinator at Chamblee Charter High School in Georgia, located in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
Reed's connection to Chamblee's football team is through his son, Edward Reed, who is a two-way star, and his former Ravens teammate, Jamal Lewis, whose son, Jazz Lewis, is a freshman wide receiver on the team.
In Dec. 2022, it was announced that Reed, who had previously shown interest in coaching at the college football level, would be named the next head coach of Bethune-Cookman.
In January 2023, Bethune-Cookman University decided not to renew the contract of its basketball coach, Terrell Reed, after he made derogatory remarks about the school's athletic facilities during a live stream.
Reed later issued an apology for his remarks.
"Reed apologized to BCU staff, students, and alumni for his lack of professionalism on social media regarding the University, staff, and other institutions. He acknowledged that his language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach, and leader."
"My dedication to improving our culture and foundation led me to become a victim of antagonists on social media while working alongside hardworking individuals at our school to achieve financial stability."
Steve Wallace, a San Francisco 49ers player who won three Super Bowl titles, is among the notable football alumni from Chamblee.
Reed, who played defense in the NFL, will now call offensive plays. The Chamblee Bulldogs ended the previous season with a 2-9 record.
