The ESPN broadcast team was also emotionally invested in the college football national championship game on Monday night, despite the high emotions of everyone else.

After watching his Ohio State Buckeyes win their ninth national title, Kirk Herbstreit, who played college football at Ohio State as a quarterback from 1989-93, was unable to control his emotions.

Herbstreit reflected on the resilient group of Buckeyes who went on a dominant playoff run after a tough loss to their rival Michigan Wolverines, resulting in a 34-23 victory.

While discussing overcoming adversity with his colleague Chris Fowler, Herbstreit's eyes filled with tears and he couldn't control them.

Herbstreit, who grew up near Ohio State in Centerville, told Van Pelt during the postgame show, "Oh, don’t start with me, man. I’m a little emotional and fired up for these guys."

"I am incredibly objective when I refer to these games. Despite my love for all Ohio State teams, this team's journey to reach this point makes me particularly happy."

In the broadcast booth, Herbstreit wiped away tears with a handkerchief as Fowler continued to speak.

Tears may flow when favorite teams win championships, as alumni at schools also experience this feeling.

After being the first player to commit to Ohio State after the hiring of John Cooper as head coach in 1988, Herbstreit played football for the Buckeyes. As a senior at Centerville High School, he was named the Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year.

Although he was used sparingly in his junior season, Herbstreit became the starter in his senior year and threw for 1,904 yards with four touchdowns and six interceptions over 11 games.

While discussing the challenges this team faced this season, Herbstreit also experienced personal adversity due to a significant loss in his life.

Ben, the golden retriever of Herbstreit, who was a constant companion on ESPN's "College GameDay," was euthanized after his struggle with cancer.

In November, Herbstreit wrote about the difficult decision to let go of Ben, who had been loved and cared for by many, after discovering that his cancer had spread throughout his organs and there was nothing left to be done.

After making the tough choice to euthanize his beloved companion, Herbstreit was overwhelmed with emotions and couldn't speak during the first "College Gameday" after the decision.

Herbstreit has been traveling the country with one of his dogs by his side, accompanied by Peter, Ben's brother.
