Don Shula's demanding coaching style, as recalled by NFL legend Larry Csonka, may not be as effective in today's NFL.
The 1972 Dolphins team, which went undefeated, included Csonka as a member.
No other NFL team has achieved both an undefeated season and a Super Bowl victory in 1972 like the Miami Dolphins.
Don Shula, one of the greatest NFL coaches, coached a team that included Larry Csonka.
On "The Ricky Cobb Show," Hall of Fame fullback Csonka discussed the challenges of playing for Shula and how his playing style may not be suitable for today's NFL.
Shula was a demanding, perfection-seeking head coach who was inescapable due to his meticulous approach to coaching. He controlled every aspect of his players' lives, from their arrival time to their hand signals on the sideline. His attention to detail was unmatched, and his formula for success made it more tolerable for players. However, when he first implemented this approach, many players looked for the first bus out of Dodge.
"It is unclear whether you could accomplish that task today. I am uncertain if his coaching style would be suitable for the NFL today. It would be a square peg in a round hole. As we began to win, it became easier to accept his demands because when you start to win consistently, you develop faith in the team and it starts to thrive like a plant growing in the sunlight."
Csonka's teammates bought into the formula and tolerated his demands more once they saw it work.
Despite being the worst team in the NFL when he arrived, he managed to transform us into a Super Bowl contender in just three years. Although we didn't win the championship, we made it back.
"We achieved perfection because we learned to embrace what he was teaching, initially rejecting it, arguing against it, and insulting each other. People left for other teams, and various events occurred. However, as we began to win, we became experts, and we all became professionals. When we realized its effectiveness, we gradually accepted it more and more."
Csonka stated that the 1972 team prioritized attention to detail over perfection, which ultimately led them to the Promised Land through execution.
