Dick Vitale, the renowned basketball broadcaster, will not be returning to the booth next week to call the Duke vs. Wake Forest game on ESPN due to an accident that occurred in his Florida home.
Vitale stated on Saturday that he has been hospitalized due to falling down at home. In a statement, Vitale mentioned that the incident has resulted in new health challenges and physical limitations.
Vitale stated that an accident at his home in Florida has resulted in new health challenges and near-term physical limitations for him.
"I must wait longer before I can fully recover. The exact time is uncertain, but I am confident that I will make a full recovery and provide updates when I have more information. Although this latest setback has been challenging, I am grateful for the support of my family, friends, and ESPN teammates."
In two years, Vitale has not officiated a game due to health issues, including cancer affecting his vocal cords.
In the summer of 2021, Vitale was diagnosed with melanoma. Later, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He returned in the fall of 2021, but had to step away to undergo surgery on his vocal cords.
In summer 2023, Vitale revealed that his cancer had spread to his vocal cords and lymph nodes, resulting in a four-year battle against four different types of cancer.
Over the past two years, he underwent radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and multiple surgeries before declaring himself cancer-free earlier this month.
Before college basketball fans can hear Vitale call another game, he must first recover from his recent fall.
