Despite playing in Sacramento until 2027, MLB's Athletics will not include California's capital in their team name.
For the next three seasons, Sacramento will host the Athletics.
The Athletics are officially just that.
The Athletics are now spending at least the next three years in Sacramento before their move to Las Vegas, having played the previous 57 seasons in Oakland.
Although the team's new location is in California, the state capital will not be included in their name, which will simply be "The Athletics."
The team's move was hinted at when the Major League Baseball schedule was unveiled during the summer, and they were shortened to simply ATH. At that point, it was uncertain whether they would be known as the Sacramento A's.
This week, the team released "brand transition guidelines" that mandate removing a geographic location from the team name for the next three years, as reported by Front Office Sports.
In recent years, teams have opted for city names without mascots (such as the Washington Football Team and Utah Hockey Club).
Since 1968, the Athletics have called Oakland home, but they began play in Philadelphia in 1901 and later moved to Kansas City before the 1955 season.
Before their move to southern Nevada, the River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, will be playing at Sutter Health Park, which is also the home of their rivals, the Giants.
The Warriors, Raiders and A's all have left Oakland since 2020.
The team's plan to relocate to Vegas in 2027 was met with opposition from the city's mayor, who deemed it "not make sense."
The Athletics signed a binding agreement to purchase 49 acres for a new ballpark, but had to switch their proposed land for the stadium after they found a new spot that required less public funding.
The stadium, which will cost approximately $1.5 billion, will be constructed on the site where the Tropicana once stood. Bally's plans to build a hotel/casino across from the stadium once it's finished.
