Despite a poor ending to the season, Sam Darnold should be the guy moving forward, according to Vikings legend.
Darnold achieved career highs in nearly every category and earned his first Pro Bowl selection.
One Minnesota Vikings legend believes Sam Darnold has done enough to remain the team's quarterback, despite some critics arguing that he cost himself a lot of money over his last couple games.
The No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft rewrote his story in his first 16 games, throwing for 4,153 yards and 35 touchdowns while completing 68.1% of his passes. All of those numbers were, by far, career highs.
In his last two games, he failed to score a touchdown and his offense only managed 18 points, despite throwing for 411 yards in one of those games.
In the final two games, Darnold displayed the same skills he was known for before joining the Vikings, prompting some to suggest that the team should consider J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback they picked with the 10th pick last year.
Chuck Foreman, a former Vikings running back, believes Darnold performed well enough to maintain his starting position.
"The guy, who was drafted by a team with no talent, gets labeled. He then moves to another team with no talent and gets labeled even more. After that, he joins San Francisco, a winning team, and learns from the coach. Finally, he comes here with Kevin and takes them to a higher level, as Foreman shared on "The Ricky Cobb Show.""
Darnold was not to blame for the two losses, according to Foreman, who shifted the responsibility onto Minnesota's offensive line.
"Only two other quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen, could have any kind of escapability under the same pressure as he was under, according to Foreman," he said.
"I hope Sam can come together with the team in the middle, as I understand the financial aspect but believe his career has been revived here. He has a following here, and I suggest making adjustments next season, but I think he should be the main player."
The New York Jets drafted Darnold, who is now a free agent after the season and a candidate for a franchise tag. In 2019, he achieved his previous highs in yards and touchdowns with the team, which were 3,024 and 19, respectively.
