DeMarcus Ware predicts that Micah Parsons won't participate in a podcast during the season if he becomes a member of the coaching staff.
I know he won't be doing it during the season, Ware said.
One of their former leaders believes he has potential solutions to help the Dallas Cowboys overcome their current turmoil.
Demarcus Ware, a former Dallas Cowboys linebacker and Hall of Famer, may consider joining the next Cowboys coaching staff if his former teammate Jason Witten is appointed as the team's head coach.
"Demarcus Ware is vouching for Jason Witten to become head coach and there is a 94% chance that he will be interested in coming over as a defensive coach."
Since 2021, Witten has been a head coach at the high school level, specifically at Liberty Christian High School in Argyle, Texas. ESPN reports that he turned down multiple assistant coach openings with NFL and college programs to take the Liberty Christian job.
In 2018, Ware worked as a pass-rush consultant on the Denver Broncos coaching staff.
If Ware were to join a hypothetical coaching staff led by Witten, he would prioritize the handling of current star linebacker Micah Parsons. Ware says the Cowboys' defense has lacked the "lightning bolt" from Parsons that it needs to compete for a Super Bowl.
"If he consistently performs on the field and plays like he did at the start of the season, he's the electricity the team needs to wake up, according to Ware. If we can get him to consistently play defense, the team would win more football games and take the pressure off quarterback Dak Prescott."
If a staff led by Witten and Ware comes into existence, Ware proposes that Parsons won't be hosting a podcast every week during the NFL season, as Parsons has been doing since the beginning of the 2023 season, when "The Edge With Micah Parsons" debuted on Bleacher Report.
""He won't be doing it during the season because he'll be too focused on getting to the quarterback and causing chaos in the backfield," Ware said."
Parsons' weekly podcast during the season is a challenging balancing act, according to Ware.
"Parsons' overlapping football and media obligations are very challenging, according to Ware. There are certain things that cannot be said, and questions will be asked to pressure him to make press."
In November 2023, Parsons disclosed on his podcast that his teammates had pressured him to overdose on C4 Energy powder before a game against the Carolina Panthers, resulting in chest pain and nausea. He concluded by admitting he gave in to "peer pressure."
In an episode in September of that year, Parsons advised NFL players to pursue relationships with high-status celebrity women, including Zendaya, despite her long-term relationship with Tom Holland.
Malik Hooker, a Cowboys safety, criticized Parsons' decision to do an in-season podcast during a separate podcast appearance.
"Hooker advised Micah in a June 27 interview on the "All Facts No Brakes" podcast to prioritize the team's success and the Super Bowl they were striving for, rather than focusing solely on the podcast's audience."
On Aug. 21, Parsons defended himself passionately when asked by reporters about the potential distraction caused by his podcast during training camp.
I believe no one truly cares about what I'm doing on a Monday afternoon when I'm at home with my kids, so why would they care if I'm on Xbox? I think we all get our own free time. When you're away from here, are you thinking about me at home? I hope not.
"Everyone is always drawn to something controversial, regardless of whether or not I try to avoid it. We all have our own opinions, and we're not going to agree to what everyone says. That's just the way life is."
In the following months, Parsons had his worst season as a pro, with career lows in sacks, tackles, and QB hits. He played in a career-low 13 games and missed games due to injury for the first time in his NFL career. The team had its worst season since he joined in 2021, finishing with a 7-10 record, resulting in the departure of head coach Mike McCarthy.
Parsons is preparing for a coaching change in the offseason for the first time as a professional and is also seeking a contract extension that some experts predict could surpass the largest ever for a defensive player in the league. This record is currently held by San Francisco 49ers star pass rusher Nick Bosa, who signed a five-year, $170 million deal in 2023.
Parsons' current salary with Bleacher Report is unknown, but it is supplementing his base NFL salary of $2.2 million in 2023 and $2.9 million in 2024. In 2025, his fifth-year option on his rookie contract will increase his salary to $24 million. After that, he will become a free agent and could potentially earn far more than $24 million.
If Ware joins the Cowboys' coaching staff, Parsons may have to forfeit his Bleacher Report salary while his NFL salary rises.
Parsons doing a podcast in the offseason would not be an issue for Ware.
During the football season, I won't do those things like having a podcast because I'm focused on winning football games and making the championships. But after the season, we can discuss any sports or activities we're involved in.
"When I win a lot, I can talk a lot."
The Giants have haunted the Cowboys' defense with late-season focus issues, resulting in consequences.
Ware's approach with Parsons is only one aspect of his broader vision for the Cowboys defense and what he would implement as a coach on staff.
"What has the Cowboys' defense lacked in recent years?" Ware replied, stating, "Staying focused at the end of the season is crucial because distractions increase as the season progresses and players become more successful."
During his playing career with the Cowboys, Ware learned the consequences of not focusing ahead of the playoffs. He says that the most challenging playoff moments he experienced were due to losses to the New York Giants.
""The most challenging playoff losses? No way! Those were the losses to the Giants!" Ware exclaimed. Afterward, they won the Super Bowl, making it one of the hardest things they've accomplished."
In the 2007 NFC Divisional round, the Cowboys, who were 13-3 and favored to win the Super Bowl, lost to the Giants, who were a 10-6 Wild Card team. The Giants went on to win Super Bowl XLII, defeating Tom Brady and the undefeated New England Patriots.
During the team's first-round bye week, Tony Romo, the former Dallas quarterback, was on vacation in Cabo, Mexico with his then-girlfriend Jessica Simpson. He was heavily scrutinized for failing to deliver a win after throwing a game-ending interception in the final seconds, sealing the game. Witten was also on the vacation with them.
Ware thinks that the bye time off negatively affected the whole team, not just Romo and Witten.
Ware stated that the trip was not the main focus, but rather the break. He explained that they possess a certain "mojo" that allows them to excel regardless of the opposing teams. However, when they took time off, they lost that edge. To maintain their sharpness, they should have practiced daily, but opted for something light instead of sitting or taking a vacation. Upon their return, Ware noticed that something was missing, which was the mojo they had lost during their break.
In 2011, the Giants and Cowboys faced off in the final week of the regular season for a division title. The Giants emerged victorious with a 31-14 win, ultimately leading to another Super Bowl triumph against Brady and the Patriots.
In 2014, Ware left the Cowboys for the Denver Broncos and won his first and only Super Bowl ring in 2015.
The Cowboys have not been to a Super Bowl since the 1995 season.
If the Cowboys hire Witten as their next head coach, Ware might get the chance to help break the drought.
