Deion Sanders and his ex-wife were at odds during a senior day celebration for their sons Shedeur and Shilo, causing a rift that felt like "WWIII."
His ex-wife has accused Sanders of forging a prenup, and he has sued her for defamation.
On senior day Friday, Shedeur Sanders, the star quarterback of Colorado, desired to share the celebration with both of his parents.
He was determined to get his mom, Pilar, to join the event, so he went to find her and convinced her to participate, despite his father, head coach Deion Sanders, being present, as stated in a video posted by Shilo Sanders on his official YouTube channel.
Shilo stated, "My brother [Shedeur] retrieved my mom from the stands due to the senior day, and we were unaware that we needed to walk. They won't comply. That's equivalent to World War III attempting to get them to walk together."
According to the video, Deion walked with Shedur and Shilo across the field during their celebration. They met their mother on the other side. Deion patted his sons on the back when they got close to Pilar, then walked away quickly.
As they celebrated and posed for photos, Pilar hugged her boys in the middle of the field.
Colorado won its last home game 52-0 against Oklahoma State.
In 1999, Deion and Pilar tied the knot. At the time, she was a successful model, while he was a renowned NFL player at the pinnacle of his fame. They welcomed three children together, including Shilo, Shedeur, and daughter Shelomi.
In 2013, the couple filed for divorce. This was Sanders' second divorce. He had previously divorced Carolyn Chambers in 1998, one year before marrying Pilar. The couple had two children together, Deion Jr. and Deiondre.
In his 2013 divorce from Pilar, Sanders initially gained custody of all three children, while Pilar was granted visitation rights. However, subsequent custody battles ensued.
In 2012, Pilar claimed that a prenuptial agreement was forged between her and Deion, which she used as leverage to seek more money in alimony and child support payments from the Pro Football Hall of Famer.
"In court, Deion stated that the reason for the dispute was greed. He pointed out that the individual had signed the contract and there was a prenuptial agreement in place. However, now that the relationship had ended, the person was no longer satisfied with the terms of the agreement due to the realization that their lifestyle would change. Deion emphasized that it was all about greed."
The judge who presided over the dispute stated that Pilar Sanders executed the agreement willingly and cannot challenge its validity in court.
""We're the underdog, and it's hard to win when you play by the rules," Larry Friedman, Pilar's attorney, stated, according to NBC Dallas-Forth Worth."
"Pilar stated to NBC Dallas-Forth Worth that she did not marry him for money, as it was evident. She has been married to him for 14 years, and her intention was to marry forever, but it wasn't his."
Pilar was sued for defamation by Deion, who claimed she harmed his reputation with accusations of domestic violence. The lawsuit was won by Deion, and an investigation found no evidence to support Pilar's allegations.
Despite losing custody of her two youngest children, Shedeur and Shelomi, in 2017, Pilar has remained a significant influence in Shedeur's life as his head coach at both Jackson State and Colorado.
In November 2023, Sanders revealed his dedication to Christianity during an interview on "Running Wild" with Bear Grylls.
Sanders stated that during his first divorce, he realized that the only things that truly loved him were his two children. Now, those children are gone, and he has experienced a devastating period of suicidal thoughts.
"I drove this car off the highway and thought it would flip, but it didn't. I was still there when I realized I couldn't continue and had to surrender to God. I raised my hands and said, "I'm done. I can't do it anymore. You got me. I give up. God, take me.""
