David Beckham: "I loathed nearly every instance of filming" the Emmy award-winning Netflix documentary.
During the process, David Beckham and his wife Victoria were anxious, but ultimately pleased with the outcome.
The Netflix documentary "Beckham," featuring soccer legend David Beckham, gave viewers a global look at the life of one of the most divisive athletes of the century.
Variety reported that Beckham "hated almost every moment of making it."
Beckham stated that the documentary made him worried and nervous, and also affected Victoria, as it was divided into four parts last year.
"Although it took me a considerable amount of time to accept that I would succeed, there were several reasons why we decided to achieve it. When I retired, I was hesitant to discuss my career and the events that led to it. However, during the pandemic, documentaries gained popularity, and it was approaching the 10-year anniversary of my retirement from football."
Beckham's personal life, soccer career, and international games with England were all featured in the documentary produced by Studio 99.
Fisher Stevens was chosen by Beckham as the right director to portray his personal and professional trials and tribulations in a four-part series.
Stevens stated that he was recommended for the director role by Leonardo DiCaprio.
Beckham was seeking an individual who would provide an unfiltered, unadulterated account of his life's journey up until that point.
"When I first encountered Fisher, I knew he would make me feel uneasy, and I knew I had to experience discomfort in order to create the documentary we produced," stated Beckham.
The reason for his hatred wasn't due to dislike of the finished product. Instead, it was the material, which brought back difficult personal moments and traumatic experiences on the pitch, causing anxiety for him and his family.
While some criticized the lack of content regarding Beckham's rumored affair with his former assistant Rebecca Loos, who alleged they had a four-month affair in April 2004, Beckham denied the rumors and stated they were "ludicrous." However, there remains doubt in some camps about the veracity of his denial.
Beckham stated that he did not view the completed documentary until its release.
"He stated that he had no involvement in the editing process and did not see any cuts in the documentary. He wanted to give Fisher control over the final product and it took some convincing to get him on board."
The documentary was well-received and both Beckham and his wife were satisfied with the results.
Victoria Beckham is the focus of an untitled documentary in the works with Netflix, which is being produced by Beckham's Studio 99.
