Danielle Collins expresses gratitude to Australian Open spectators for supporting her career following criticism.
Danielle Collins isn't forming any new friendships in Australia this week, and she's content with that.
In the 2022 Australian Open, Collins, a finalist, advanced to the third round of the Grand Slam after defeating Destanee Aiava of Australia on Tuesday. However, her victory was met with a harsh reaction from the home crowd.
As the crowd jeered her throughout the game, Collins responded by blowing kisses and encouraging the fans once she clinched victory.
"I knew it was going to be a tough crowd, so I decided to take home the bigger paycheck," Collins said after the match in an on-court interview. "Thanks for the paycheck, Australia."
"Being an athlete is a pretty amazing feeling because the people who dislike or hate you pay your bills," she said. "This makes it a really rewarding experience to be out here, and it just feels like a great day."
In her post-game press conference, Collins emphasized that the crowd's energy motivates her, regardless of which team they support.
"The idea that people who dislike or hate you pay your bills as a professional athlete is a cool concept. I remind myself daily that the haters and critics who buy tickets to heckle me are contributing to my fund."
Collins remarked that she enjoys going on "five-star vacations" with her friends, and that her earnings from the Australian Open will be used for their next trip.
"We enjoy large vessels, specifically yachts. We'll share our experience and keep you updated."
