Bill Belichick's focus was on UNC, not the Patriots, after his replacement was fired after one season.
Jerod Mayo was fired after going 4-13, and Bill Belichick began recruiting on the trail.
Jerod Mayo, a former pupil of Bill Belichick, was fired after just one season as the New England Patriots' successor.
At the moment, the least of his worries is what's happening with the team he won six Super Bowls with.
Belichick, who was on a recruiting trip for the North Carolina Tar Heels, stated on "The Pat McAfee Show" that the Patriots never gave him a ring despite their decision to fire Mayo after a 4-13 record this year.
Belichick stated that he did not have much to comment on the Patriots' situation, as the decision-makers are Robert Kraft, Jonathan Kraft, and Robyn Glaser.
Robert selected Mayo, but ultimately, the decision-making process is something they would need to address.
"From the outside, I am unsure because they haven't contacted me and requested information."
Belichick's replacement being one-and-done in Foxborough prompted McAfee to inquire about his future plans. However, Belichick is now embarking on a new journey as he continues to construct his first roster at Chapel Hill.
Belichick selected Mayo, who was already on his staff, as the Patriots' next head coach after the team and Belichick parted ways following a 4-13 season, ending a 24-year relationship that made Belichick one of the best head coaches in football history.
Belichick eventually brought Mayo onto his coaching staff in 2019 as a linebackers coach before Kraft made his choice last year. Mayo played for the Patriots from 2008-15, winning a Super Bowl with the franchise during the 2014 campaign.
On Monday, Kraft accepted responsibility for the Mayo situation, stating that the entire scenario was his fault for letting Mayo go after just one season.
I regret putting Jerod in an untenable situation, despite his potential as a head coach," Kraft stated. "He needed more time before taking the job.
"Although I'm a fan of this team, I now need to search for a coach who can lead us to the playoffs and potentially win championships."
Belichick's first college coaching gig, with the Tar Heels, will be closely watched during his inaugural season, as he is a former Patriots player and expected to be a top candidate for Mayo's replacement.
