Bill Belichick receives advice from former NFL coach Bruce Arians amidst North Carolina football coaching rumors.
Belichick admitted to conversing with UNC officials regarding the coaching job.
Bill Belichick, the former head coach of the New England Patriots, has been a prominent figure in the media during the current NFL season.
In January, the Atlanta Falcons interviewed Belichick but did not extend an offer to him. Despite not receiving any other NFL team's offers, Belichick's appearances on ESPN's "ManningCast" and the CW's "Inside the NFL" have kept him close to football.
But the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach seems to still be interested in coaching.
Belichick discussed his talks with the North Carolina Tar Heels about their head coaching vacancy on "The Pat McAfee Show" this week.
Another former NFL coach commented on the Belichick situation in Chapel Hill next season.
Bruce Arians, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to victory in the 2021 Super Bowl, admitted he was "very surprised" his contemporary showed interest in coaching at the collegiate level. He also offered Belichick some advice.
"I am taken aback. I believed he would wait for the NFL hiring process to unfold," Arians stated on the "Scoop City" podcast. "There are advantages to returning to college, but I lacked tolerance for novices. I certainly do not have the patience for first-years."
In 2022, Arians left his coaching position and took on a consultant role with the Bucs, while Belichick remains as a coach at 72 years old.
"If I'm going to give Bill one piece of advice, you better bring a lot of patience with you," Arians said. "Coaching rookies making money is one thing, but dealing with freshmen making money is a whole other story."
Arians started his coaching career at the college level, working for programs such as Mississippi State, Alabama, and others.
If Belichick decides to join a college program, he will need to be mindful of NIL and the transfer portal, which have significantly impacted the college football landscape in recent years.
Belichick discussed the components of a college program if he were a head coach.
""The college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for players with NFL potential, offering a professional program that includes training, nutrition, scheme, coaching, and techniques that transfer to the NFL," he stated."
