At 89, Tom McVie, a renowned NHL coach, has passed away.
For the past 30 years, McVie has been an ambassador for the Bruins.
An 89-year-old former coach, Tom McVie, who served as a Boston Bruins ambassador and coached the New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, and Winnipeg Jets, has passed away.
Cam Neely, president of the Boston Bruins, expressed deep sadness on behalf of the entire organization after learning of Tom McVie's passing on Monday.
"Tom, who served as coach, scout, and ambassador for the Bruins family for over 30 years, was a significant part of our team. His unique hockey mind, colorful personality, gruff voice, and unmatched sense of humor made every room he entered lively. We are deeply saddened by his passing and offer our thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones."
McVie spent 21 seasons in minor league hockey, competing in the International League, Western League, and Eastern Hockey League before transitioning into coaching.
He commenced his NHL coaching career with the Capitals on December 31, 1975, and coached them for three consecutive seasons.
He coached the Capitals and then helped the Jets win the Avco Cup in 1979. He later became the head coach for the Jets during their first two NHL seasons.
After coaching the Winnipeg Jets, McVie became the second coach for the New Jersey Devils following their relocation from Denver in 1982.
As a head coach, McVie had 73 ties across 462 regular-season games, with a record of 126-263.
In 2011, when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup, McVie was named an ambassador for the team.
Before becoming a Bruins ambassador, he was an assistant coach with the team.
