As the schedule for the 2025 WNBA season is released, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will face off against each other in the opening game.
Each of them found stardom in successful seasons for Clark and Reese.
The 2025 WNBA regular season schedule was released on Monday, and the upcoming match between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese will take place immediately.
On May 17, one day after the league's opening slate, Clark's Indiana Fever and Reese's Chicago Sky will face off in their respective season openers.
The rivalry between Iowa and LSU, which began in college, has continued to the professional level, with tension evident in the Rookie of the Year race and their on-court battles.
Reese, despite being a rookie, made a significant impact on Chicago in her first season and was named an All-Star, just like Clark, who won Rookie of the Year.
Last season, four meetings between the Fever and Sky were held, with each meeting being more eagerly anticipated than the previous one as both teams competed to outdo each other and secure a victory for their respective squads.
In the four meetings, Clark's Fever won three games, while Reese had the highest number of points and rebounds. However, Clark outperformed Reese in assists in all four games.
In addition to the tense moments in those games, a flagrant foul by Chennedy Carter on Clark early in the season caused controversy and sparked a lot of debate after the veteran guard fell to the ground.
On June 16, while attempting a layup against the Sky, Clark was hit in the head by Reese's arm as she tried to swat the ball away. Reese went down hard.
Reese was given a yellow card for a foul during the game, and she defended herself afterward, stating that she had only intended to make a play on the ball and not cause harm to Clark.
Clark would agree with Reese's intentions, recognizing that he was only trying to aid his team at that specific moment.
Both Reese and Clark have achieved celebrity status through their impressive performances in college and the pros. Reese, in particular, expressed her gratitude for the 2023 national championship game between her Tigers and Clark's Hawkeyes, stating that it had a profound impact on her life.
But that change has sometimes come with hate.
"Reese stated, "I believe it's the fans, specifically her fans, the Iowa and now Indiana fans, who are fiercely loyal to her. I admire their dedication. However, sometimes their support can be disrespectful, and I think there is a significant amount of racism involved in it.""
The WNBA promptly featured Clark and Reese in their latest rivalry chapter, as they have both played crucial roles in expanding women's basketball and sports.
The WNBA schedule release includes the debut of the Golden State Valkyries, who will play their first game on May 16 against the Los Angeles Sparks.
The 2024 WNBA champions, the New York Liberty, will have their ring ceremony on May 17 prior to their game against the Las Vegas Aces.
The Fever and Sky will have five meetings in the 2025 season.
