A majority of Democrats are against transgender athletes participating in women's sports, according to a new NYT poll.
In 2024, the issue faced significant opposition from a broad range of individuals.
According to a recent survey by the New York Times and Ipsos, a significant number of Americans, including a majority of Democrats, believe that transgender athletes should not be allowed to participate in women's sports.
Should transgender female athletes, who were born male but now identify as female, be allowed to compete in women's sports?
Out of the 2,128 participants, 79% believed that biological males who identify as women should not be permitted to join women's sports.
Among the 1,025 individuals who identified as Democrats or leaning Democrat, 67% believed that transgender athletes should not compete with women.
Among 1,022 Republicans, that number was 94%.
The group with the most reluctance to say transgender athletes shouldn't be allowed to compete was represented by 81 independents who were interviewed. Out of these, 64% were against it, while 26% refused to answer. Only 3% of Democrats and 1% of Republicans refused to answer.
In 2024, the country experienced a significant change in perception and opposition towards transgender athletes competing in women's sports, as several news stories gained national attention and sparked controversy. This issue was a significant campaign topic during the November presidential election, with President-elect Trump and other Republicans emphasizing it.
The CWA legislative action committee's national exit poll revealed that 70% of moderate voters consider the issue of "Donald Trump's opposition to transgender boys and men playing girls' and women's sports and using girls' and women's bathrooms" significant to them.
While 6% considered it the most crucial issue, 44% deemed it "very important."
A Gallup poll from last year revealed that nearly 70% of Americans believe biological men shouldn't compete in women's sports.
In June, a survey by NORC at the University of Chicago found that 65% of respondents believed transgender athletes should not be allowed to participate in sports leagues that correspond to their preferred gender identity, while 69% specifically opposed adult transgender female athletes competing in women's sports.
As Trump prepares to resume his presidency on Monday, Republicans are introducing legislation to tackle the issue in Congress.
The House of Representatives passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act on Tuesday, with two Democrats supporting it.
If the bill advances to the Senate and passes, Trump will sign it into law early in his term.
