Despite being a lifelong Democrat, former American Olympic cyclist Inga Thompson expressed hope for Donald Trump's incoming presidency due to his stance on safeguarding women and girls in sports.

Trump's promise to abolish transgender inclusion in women's sports was a significant issue in his presidential campaign. During the election season, pro-Trump advertisements depicted Vice President Kamala Harris as supporting transgender women's participation in women's sports, which Trump deemed "extremely far out."

Thompson found herself supporting him to that point.

She confided to The Telegraph that she didn't want her boyfriend to hear what she was about to say because they were both Democrats. She had once despised Trump due to her upbringing in Reno, Nevada, near the casinos. Growing up, she was surrounded by people in the gaming industry who detested Trump. She knew individuals who had struck deals with him, only for him to renege. During Trump's first election, she found herself mocking him.

"This election, my stance is that if he prioritizes protecting women, I will support him. I believe this is the greatest danger to women in my lifetime, and I must vote for women."

In 2023, Thompson, a former athlete, lost her director job with a cycling team due to her views on keeping biological males out of women's sports and calling for protests against the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)'s transgender athlete policy.

Democrats' support for trans inclusion in women's sports upset Thompson, as she expressed to the paper.

"She expressed her anger towards the party, as a Democrat herself, for continuing to disregard women's rights. She felt that they had not learned their lesson from the Olympics and were blind to the consequences of their actions."

Thompson stated that she did not view it as a "left-wing, Democratic issue." Instead, she emphasized that what she and Democrats desired was "equilibrium."

We're not radicals, we're just about common sense. After their response to the Protection of Women in Sports Act, I've lost them forever. This is when you realize the party has lost the plot, she added.

A majority of Democrats, including Thompson, are against the policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in women's sports.

Should transgender female athletes, who were born male but now identify as female, be allowed to compete in women's sports?

Out of the 2,128 participants, 79% believed that biological males who identify as women should not be permitted to join women's sports.

Among the 1,025 individuals who identified as Democrats or leaning Democrat, 67% believed that transgender athletes should not compete with women.

In the House of Representatives this month, two Democrats joined Republican lawmakers in supporting a bill that prohibits male-born athletes from competing on girls' school sports teams.

The proposed bill, introduced by Rep. Greg Steube, aims to modify federal law to mandate that student athletes participate in school sports teams that align with their birth gender.

The bill will go to the Senate.
