Rachel Morin's mother raises concerns about illegal immigration following her daughter's murder.
An illegal immigrant from El Salvador is accused of murdering Rachel Morin in Maryland.
On Wednesday, the mother of a woman who was allegedly murdered by an illegal immigrant from El Salvador testified to lawmakers about the emotional moment she discovered her daughter's death while also stating that U.S. borders are not secure.
At a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on the border crisis, Patty Morin, whose daughter Rachel was killed last year in Maryland, testified.
An illegal immigrant from El Salvador, who is also accused of murder in his home country and raping a mother and her 9-year-old daughter in Los Angeles, was identified as Rachel's suspected killer after her body was found stuffed in a culvert following a months-long investigation.
The discovery of the suspected illegal immigrant took ten months and was a complete shock to our entire family, she informed lawmakers.
An illegal immigrant who escaped from El Salvador was waiting for her on the trail. I was informed that they captured her, dragged her through the woods, raped her, strangled her, and murdered her. Her body was covered in bruises. I can attest to this from my visit to the funeral home, as it was one of the most graphic things I have ever seen.
The hearing, "A Country Without Borders: How Biden-Harris’ Open-Borders Policies Have Undermined Our Safety and Security," witnessed lawmakers engage in a heated debate over who was responsible for the crisis at the border, which resulted in a record number of migrants crossing the border and the release of several criminals into the US.
Prior to the hearing, the Republicans issued a report criticizing the Biden administration's policies and accusing it of causing the crisis and its aftermath.
Chairman Mark Green questioned why Biden and Harris have not taken meaningful action to address the disaster, despite witnessing their resistance to doing so.
The Republicans accuse the Biden administration of causing the crisis, while the administration and Democrats argue that Congress is responsible for the broken system and lack of funding. They specifically mention a bipartisan Senate bill that would provide more funding and limits on asylum entries, but Republicans rejected it, claiming it would legalize high numbers at the border.
Since June, the number of encounters at the border has decreased significantly due to President Biden's order limiting entries into the U.S.
According to ranking member Bennie Thompson, border encounters have decreased by 55% since the president's proclamation on June 4, and the lowest number of border encounters has been recorded since September 2020.
He also scolded Republicans for not backing the Senate bill.
"Former President Trump directed Republicans to block the Senate bipartisan border deal and refuse necessary border security funding. Republicans prioritize politics over border security solutions," he stated.
But Morin had a warning for Americans watching the hearing.
"The borders are not safe, as Morin warned. We live 1,800 miles away from the southern border. If you have a sanctuary city in your state, you're not safe," Morin cautioned.
