Teamsters face backlash from Democrats after making historic non-endorsement.
Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts claimed that Teamsters were 'misguided or uninformed' about Donald Trump.
Overnight, several Democrats reacted to the revelation that the Teamsters, under General President Sean O'Brien, had decided not to issue a presidential endorsement.
Unfortunately, neither major candidate pledged to prioritize the interests of working people over big business, according to O'Brien.
Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., who, like O'Brien, originates from the Boston region, characterized former President Donald Trump as the "most anti-labor president we have ever had."
"According to McGovern, these workers are either misinformed or uninformed about Trump's labor record, and his loyalty lies not with the working class."
The House Rules Committee's top Democrat, McGovern, stated that it is evident that Trump favors the wealthy over the working class.
Since the 1996 election between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, the Teamsters have not issued a non-endorsement. Their previous GOP endorsement was for George H.W. Bush in 1988, over Michael Dukakis.
Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., tweeted that Harris had cast the tie-breaking Senate vote to safeguard Teamsters' pensions.
Nevada's Teamsters councils endorsed Harris independently of the national organization, as shared by Horsford.
"She’s fighting for us," Horsford said.
The Teamsters in Nevada, represented by Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto, D-Nev., recognize Kamala Harris as a champion for their union workers.
Cortez-Masto stated, "I learned it from my father, a Teamster in Las Vegas, that when we unite, we triumph."
Meanwhile, former House speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., expressed disappointment over the Teamsters' decision.
The Butch Lewis Act of our American Rescue Plan, which saved Teamsters pensions, was passed by Democrats and Biden-Harris without any Republican support, as stated by her on X, formerly Twitter.
Trump viewed the non-endorsement of Harris as an honor for him.
Trump stated during his campaign in New York City that the Democrats would not receive his endorsement. He also mentioned that the internal Teamsters vote showed about 60% of national membership supporting his candidacy.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, a prominent progressive in Congress, expressed disappointment over the non-endorsement of Kamala Harris by the Evergreen State's sub-council, while emphasizing that the council still supports Harris.
She informed the Times that she believed the phenomenon would become more widespread nationally.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., accused O'Brien of supporting anti-worker and anti-choice Senate candidates while boosting Republicans all year.
The Sheet Metal, Air, Rail & Transportation union has recently given the conservatives their endorsement, while O'Brien has reportedly reached out to some Republican lawmakers, including Sens. Josh Hawley and JD Vance, according to the BBC.
The union endorsed two U.S. Senate candidates, namely Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz.
A spokesman for Harris' campaign stated that Trump believes striking workers should be fired, while Harris "literally walked the picket line."
Organized labor has endorsed the Vice President due to her strong union record, as seen in Teamsters locals across the country, according to Lauren Hitt.
The council representing 35,000 Teamsters in Pennsylvania disregarded O'Brien's non-endorsement and backed Harris.
The board of Teamsters Joint Council 40, which covers Pittsburgh, Erie, State College, and Washington, voted unanimously to choose Harris.
Council president Carl Bailey stated in an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that she is the ideal choice for both our locals and our unions.
O'Brien has not shied away from confronting Republicans, as he and Senator Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., almost came to blows during a 2023 hearing in which Senator Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., had to intervene as Mullin rose from his chair after the men told each other to "stand your butt up."
