The Trump campaign highlights union workers' support following the Teamsters' surprising declaration.
For the first time in over 25 years, the Teamsters have not backed a presidential candidate.
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has declared that they will not endorse either Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 White House election.
Despite internal polling showing majority support for Trump among its rank-and-file membership, the powerful union opted to remain neutral in the presidential race for the first time in over a quarter-century.
The populist former president and his campaign highlighted the robust backing of union workers.
Trump stated that it was a great honor after the Teamsters announced they would not endorse the Democrats. This was a significant development, he told reporters during a stop in New York City before holding a rally on Long Island.
The campaign emphasized that President Donald Trump had a more than 25-point lead over Vice President Joe Biden among Teamsters members in both online and phone surveys.
Karoline Leavitt, the national press secretary for the Trump campaign, stated that the Teamsters have made it clear they want Trump back in the White House. These hardworking individuals are the backbone of America, and Trump will fiercely defend them when he returns to office.
Since 1980, the union with over one million members in the U.S. and a strong connection to working-class voters in key Midwestern general election battlegrounds and swing states across the country has always endorsed the Democratic candidate for president.
In the 2024 presidential race, the Teamsters were the only one of the nation's top ten unions to not endorse Harris.
Trump stated that he believes the Teamsters' move will influence the election, as they have a significant impact.
Since Harris became the Democratic Party's 2024 ticket leader two months ago, Trump's support among Teamsters has increased, according to the union's data. Prior to Biden's departure, the president was leading Trump among Teamster members, 44.3% to 36.3%.
As the first president, Biden set a precedent by joining striking workers on the picket lines.
The union stated that their member polling did not show majority support for Vice President Harris and there was no unanimous backing among the membership for President Trump.
Neither major candidate made serious commitments to our union to prioritize the interests of working people over Big Business, according to Teamsters general president Sean O'Brien.
O'Brien stated that they tried to obtain commitments from Trump and Harris to refrain from interfering in crucial union campaigns and respecting the right of Teamsters members to strike, but were unsuccessful in doing so.
O'Brien stated that the polling of rank and file members would be a significant factor, but not the sole determinant, in deciding whether to endorse a candidate and, if so, whom they would support.
The endorsement decision will ultimately depend on the opinions of the rank and file members, polling, and deliberation among the general executive board. O'Brien also repeated his criticism of Trump's recent comments in an interview with Elon Musk, where the former president praised the tech CEO for firing striking workers, which is illegal.
O'Brien stated that Trump's comments are a factor in the Teamsters' endorsement decision.
The Teamsters union has not endorsed either major party presidential nominee, but the Harris campaign has received support from "many Teamsters locals and rank-and-file."
According to Harris campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt, while Donald Trump advocates for striking workers to be fired, Vice President Harris has consistently supported organized labor and has even physically stood with them on picket lines.
The Vice President's strong union record has earned her the endorsement of Teamsters locals across the country, along with the majority of organized labor. In her speech to the Teamsters on Monday, she pledged to always fight for the rank-and-file, as they have always been her top priority.
