158 Democrats oppose legislation to expel undocumented offenders who perpetrate sexual offenses.
Earlier this year, Rep. Nancy Mace presented the Act on Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens.
Over 150 House Democrats opposed a bill that would expel illegal immigrants who have been convicted of a sexual offense or conspired to commit one.
On Wednesday, the Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support. Fifty-one Democrats and all present Republicans voted for the bill, which passed 266 to 158.
Reps. Mary Peltola, D-Alaska, Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez, D-Wash., Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., and Hillary Scholten, D-Mich. are among the Democrats who voted for the bill.
Two Democrats who voted for the bill are running for higher office: Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., is seeking the Senate seat and Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., is running for governor.
The legislation would classify illegal immigrants who confess to domestic violence or sex-related offenses, or are convicted of them, as inadmissible in the U.S. in addition to deporting migrants convicted of sex crimes.
The House GOP is highlighting problems resulting from the border crisis, which has impacted cities and states nationwide for several months.
Hours before the vote, Mace informed Planet Chronicle Digital that she expected Democrats to oppose her bill with a "100%" certainty.
Mace declared that voting against it makes you sexist towards women.
"Because we're discussing illegal immigrants who are committing domestic violence, rape, and murder on women and children, they must be deported. They should not be permitted to enter our country."
Democrats have panned the bill as xenophobic, however.
During the debate on the bill, Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., stated that the group is once again discussing a partisan bill that uses fear-mongering to talk about immigrants, rather than working together to repair the immigration system.
"Republicans have a history of scapegoating immigrants and using domestic violence as a weapon, which shouldn't surprise me."
Although there is significant opposition, GOP efforts to emphasize the border crisis have received some Democratic backing.
While 148 lawmakers voted against the measure, House Republicans previously passed a bill to detain and deport migrants convicted of assaulting law enforcement with the help of 54 Democrats.
The Laken Riley Act, supported by 37 House Democrats, was backed by the GOP and aimed to address the alleged killing of an Augusta University nursing student by an illegal immigrant.
