The FBI claims that Iran attempted to sway the election by secretly transmitting stolen data from the Trump campaign to Biden's team.
The 2024 presidential election has seen accusations of foreign interference, with Iran being just one of the countries accused.
During the summer, Iranian cyber actors attempted to "sow discord and influence the outcome of U.S. elections" by sending messages to individuals involved in President Biden's re-election campaign, containing stolen information from former President Trump's campaign, according to U.S. agencies.
The FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence announced on Wednesday that Iranian malicious cyber actors sent unsolicited emails to individuals associated with President Biden's campaign in late June and early July, containing an excerpt from stolen, non-public material from former President Trump's campaign as text in the emails.
No information was found indicating if the recipients responded to the messages.
Since June, the U.S. intelligence agencies claimed that Iran has continued to interfere in elections and provided stolen Trump campaign material to U.S. media outlets.
Since June, Iranian malicious cyber actors have persisted in their attempts to transmit confidential information related to former President Trump's campaign to American news outlets.
The interference from Iran in the elections is intended to create division and weaken public trust in our electoral process, according to the agencies.
"The FBI, as the lead for threat response, has been tracking the activity of foreign actors who are increasing their election influence activities as we approach November. They have been in contact with the victims and will continue to investigate and gather information in order to pursue and disrupt the threat actors responsible."
