One year after his meteoric rise, country sensation Oliver Anthony is leaving the industry to start a traveling ministry.
Last year, Christopher Anthony Lunsford, known as Anthony, gained popularity with his hit song "Rich Men North of Richmond" about D.C. politicians.
Country sensation Oliver Anthony has decided to leave the music industry.
In a lengthy YouTube video this week, Christopher Anthony Lunsford, the 32-year-old who gained fame a year ago with his hit song "Rich Men North of Richmond," sat in a wooded area with his two dogs discussing life and his career.
"Anthony announced that he has decided to switch his business from a Nashville management company to a traveling ministry, as he no longer needs to exist within the music industry. He made this decision after discussing his belief that the system is broken."
He mentioned that he wants to maintain a family business, as his great-grandfather was a traveling minister.
The Real Revival Project, which is a grassroots music festival, has the potential to transform our landscape, culture, and way of life, as stated in a video posted on Tuesday.
Anthony announced that he will be hosting his first "thrown together" show on Saturday, with the goal of creating an event that runs parallel to Nashville and avoids the monopolies of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. He intends to bring music back to towns that have been devoid of it for a long time.
Anthony aims to boost the economies of these small towns by highlighting their culture through the use of local musicians and vendors, thereby eliminating the need to travel to Pittsburgh for entertainment.
In the video, Anthony disclosed that he has earned enough money through his music career to never have to work again and to have everything he desires.
He stated that he felt a "calling" to a "voice from God" that kept placing a "vision" in his head of a way to make a "real impact" in the world, to bring about "real change," and to ignite a "fire" that no one could extinguish in his lifetime or after.
Anthony stated that he is a conservative due to his belief in the First and Second Amendment, but he is unsure if he identifies as a Republican.
He stated that he believes our way of living is outdated and foolish, benefiting only those at the top of the social hierarchy, rendering the need for us to serve others less important.
He stated that his time in the music industry has shown him the extent of control and visibility that exists at the top level. He added, "The analytics I can obtain on my fan base are alarming. It's information that the FBI should not have access to, let alone me."
Anthony acknowledged that his actions are not revolutionary, but his goal is to help bring together millions of people who share the vision of returning to a normal life.
Anthony, a resident of Virginia with his wife and three children, experienced a rapid rise to fame last year with the success of "Rich Men North of Richmond" online. The song targets Washington, D.C. politicians who seek control.
According to Rolling Stone, Anthony said on Instagram that he was "in the process of getting out of the music industry. It’s a big joke" before making the video.
Planet Chronicle Digital contacted Anthony and representatives from Live Nation and Ticketmaster for comment.
