In an erotic thriller, Nicole Kidman, 57, finds it empowering to be viewed as a "sexual being."
The upcoming film 'Babygirl' features an Australian actress in the lead role.
Nicole Kidman is fully embracing her sexuality.
The Academy Award-winning actress, who stars in the upcoming erotic thriller "Babygirl," discussed her new "raw and dangerous" role in the film and why it's empowering to be viewed as a "sexual being" at 57 years old.
"Women are often dismissed as sexual beings during their careers. It was refreshing to be viewed in this way, according to the Australian actress who played Romy, a powerful CEO and mother who had a hot affair with her younger intern, Samuel, in the movie. From the moment she read the script, she knew it was a unique voice and place she hadn't been before. Her character, Romy, had reached a stage where she was unsure of her identity, desires, and goals, despite appearing to have it all. She believes that this relatability is what makes her character so appealing to audiences."
"The film is very liberating, according to Kidman. She hopes it will be for others as well. Some people have called it the most disturbing film they've ever seen, which Kidman apologizes for."
"When I read it, I was struck by how different it was from any film I had seen before. I thought it was incredibly sexy," she later said. "It was so raw and dangerous, and I couldn't believe we were being given the funds to make it. The sexuality of it felt dangerous. It wasn't written for a 20-year-old, let alone a 30-year-old."
According to THR, Kidman portrays different types of orgasms in the movie, which she found worth investigating further.
"I blush, still!" she exclaimed when asked about her experience of performing different orgasms on camera. "That's insane. But that's a good thing, I suppose. I'm very interested in exploring those things, but I'm not that extroverted. I was so in character. To reveal all of it, it's too sacred."
Halina Reijn, the female director of the film, is crucial for Kidman to work on this aspect of the film with her.
"Hollywood orgasms may not look or sound pretty, but those that are different are more interesting and diverse. Halina has always wanted to do something like this, which is why we need women in filmmaking to tell different stories. It's not just about fairness, but also about the fascination of seeing something extraordinary in the cinema with a group of people. I want people to experience this in theaters, not just watch it secretly at home."
The actress has been kept busy with six upcoming projects in 2024, including starring in Netflix's "The Perfect Couple," the Paramount+ series "Lioness," and more.
"She shared that she always feels like there's a limited amount of time in the industry, and she's trying to choose her roles wisely. She added that she's also raising her daughters, has a marriage to husband Keith Urban, and a lot of girlfriends. Furthermore, she has a very tight family, not just her immediate family."
"My family is an integral part of my work, and my musician husband shares that nomadic mindset. He's not someone who is tied down to one place, and our girls have always been encouraged to embrace the world and become global citizens. We travel and explore together, which is not only a fulfilling experience but also an excellent education."
Despite her busy professional schedule, Kidman aspires to pursue activities that will nourish her on a deeper, personal level.
"I might do a play. I would like to hike Machu Picchu. I want to go skiing, so I have to not be filming to ski," she said. "I love hiking in Austria. My husband and I want to go do that. And then we want to take the girls to Japan on spring break. And lots of swimming in the ocean. I find the ocean very, very soothing. I just love the magnitude of it; it puts everything into perspective for me."
"I love mountains too," Kidman said. "Being held captive in a room for 24 hours is torturous for me. I need fresh air and to be able to walk. It's called forest bathing."
"Babygirl" is set to open in theaters on Dec. 25.
