Pneumonia hospitalizes Goo Goo Dolls singer, forces concert cancellations in South Africa.
Concert dates in South Africa for 90s rock band Goo Goo Dolls were postponed due to lead singer John Rzeznik's illness.
John Rzeznik, the lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls, was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia and had to cancel a scheduled concert series in South Africa.
In a video from his hospital room, the "Slide" singer apologized to fans for postponing the shows while wearing a blue medical gown and a black Herschel hat.
The rock band, which gained popularity in the '90s, was slated to perform in South Africa from December 4th to 7th.
John from the Goo Goo Dolls apologized in a video on social media, explaining that he had pneumonia and was hospitalized.
We're doing our best to get back down there as soon as possible, and I will keep you updated on our progress. I deeply regret that we couldn't accomplish this, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We will make it right and make amends with you.
"Thanks for being patient."
"I'm truly sorry that I cannot be there, but I wound up going to a doctor and I have pneumonia. And they checked me into a hospital. And I'm stuck here for a day or two." — John Rzeznik, Goo Goo Dolls
After his video message, the updated tour dates for March were displayed on the screen.
The band announced on Instagram that they were postponing their South Africa shows due to a doctor's advice for rest and recovery. Despite their excitement for the country, they were heartbroken to have to cancel the shows. They thanked their fans for their understanding and promised to make it worth the wait when they returned in March 2025.
The Goo Goo Dolls experienced mainstream success with the release of their hit single "Name" from their fifth studio album in 1995. In 1998, they earned recognition for their song "Iris," which was written for the film "City of Angels" and spent over a dozen weeks on the Billboard Hot 100.
The band has sold millions of albums worldwide and has continued to tour since the release of their sixth studio album, "Dizzy Up the Girl," in 1998.
In April 2025, the Goo Goo Dolls will be performing at the Stagecoach Country Music Festival alongside Zach Bryan, Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Ashley McBryde, and Lana Del Rey in Indio, Calif.
