Harvey Weinstein, a disgraced movie mogul, has been indicted on additional sex crimes charges before his retrial in New York, Manhattan prosecutors announced at a hearing on Thursday.
The arraignment for Weinstein is scheduled for Sept. 18, and the indictment will remain sealed until then.
On Monday, Weinstein, 72, underwent emergency heart surgery at a Manhattan hospital and was absent from the hearing on Thursday.
At a recent court hearing, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office revealed that prosecutors were presenting evidence of up to three additional allegations against Weinstein, dating back to the mid-2000s.
Whether the new charges will be included in the retrial or handled as a separate case by the court remains uncertain, as prosecutors hope to retry Weinstein after his 2020 conviction on rape and sexual assault charges was tossed by an appeals court earlier this year.
Last week, British prosecutors announced that they would not pursue charges of indecent assault against Weinstein, who was the main figure of the #MeToo movement in 2017 when women came forward with accounts of his misconduct.
The Miramax co-founder, who is 72 years old, has consistently stated that any sexual activity was consensual.
He will next appear in Manhattan court for a hearing in the case on Sept. 12, and his retrial is tentatively scheduled for November.
