Wilmer Valderrama shares harrowing plane experience that made him doubt his existence and profession.
At the time of the incident, Wilmer Valderrama was traveling with 'That 70s Show' costars Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson, and friend Colin Hanks.
Wilmer Valderrama is grateful to be alive today.
In his new book, "An American Story: Everyone's Invited," the "That 70s Show" star recounted a harrowing plane experience that caused him to reevaluate his career and what truly matters in life.
"According to US Weekly, Valderrama wrote in his memoir that a group of actors and insiders is returning to Hollywood from New Orleans after the Super Bowl, but the flight is not going smoothly. A winter storm is causing turbulence in the skies, and the mood on board is tense."
While traveling with "70s Show" costars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson, as well as other friends including Colin Hanks, Valderrama stated that the small plane began to pitch up, down, and side to side.
"He wrote, "I'm feeling lightheaded and it's getting hard to breathe. Oxygen masks fall from the ceiling, and I wonder if they fell due to turbulence or some other reason.""
Before realizing the severity of the situation, the pilot had already donned a full Air Force mask, which was significantly larger than ours.
"Our plane is going down," the actor wrote. "Colin clutches the armrests of his seat with a death grip. Ashton’s jaw has dropped to his lap. Something is definitely not right with this plane."
The captain, as per Valderrama, stated that carbon monoxide was present in the plane's interior due to an "oxygen valve malfunction."
At that point, Valderrama and Kutcher shared one mask while Masterson had the extra.
"If we crash high on a mountainside and they can't find us, I can't envision a positive outcome. Ashton will likely be confused about who to eat first, and since he enjoys Latin American cuisine, it's possible that I will be his first choice."
Against all odds, the plane eventually landed safely.
"We released a cheer, but it feels like an eternity has just passed. It’s not a joyful cheer," Valderrama wrote. "It’s an unsteady cheer, as if we’re all trying to come to terms with what just transpired."
Valderrama said that although the incident's timing is uncertain, it made him doubt his career aspirations and the roles he desired to play.
He sought guidance from experienced actors like Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp and arrived at a single conclusion.
"If my life had ended on the plane that day, what would have happened?" Valderrama wrote. "We all will eventually die, so it's crucial to prepare for the future. However, we must also cherish the present moment."
