Contestant on 'Wheel of Fortune' forfeits $1 million due to a single missed word.
During the tense moment, Ryan Seacrest's heart was pounding.
During Ryan Seacrest's second week hosting "Wheel of Fortune," a contestant missed out on the $1 million prize.
On Monday night, Vivian Tran missed out on the grand prize because she failed to answer one word correctly during the nerve-wracking puzzle.
"During the Bonus Round, Seacrest exclaimed, "My heart is racing as this is a first for me. The stakes are high as you're playing for $1 million.""
Tran additionally received a wild card for an extra letter.
Pat Sajak's replacement, Seacrest, revealed that the game show had switched from the traditional $100,000 envelope to a $1 million envelope.
A small wheel with envelopes containing prizes was spun by Tran, and one was chosen at random.
The puzzle category was "What Are You Doing?" and Tran picked the letters C, H, M, I, and P.
The player on the "Wheel of Fortune" board was prompted with "_ _ _ E R I N G S _ M E HELP" after Vanna White revealed the correct letters.
Before attempting the puzzle, Tran admitted she was feeling "anxious".
"Seeking assistance? Providing assistance? Searching for assistance? Looking for help?"
Tran was initially frustrated and emotional when the "Wheel of Fortune" puzzle revealed the answer as "Offering some help."
She put her head in her hands when she discovered the $1 million prize in her envelope.
"You were on the brink of winning a million dollars," Seacrest stated after revealing the envelope. "Just a little more and it would have been yours."
Despite being stunned after missing out on the grand prize, Tran remained upbeat and ended up winning $27,300 and a trip to Europe.
"The stakes for 'Wheel of Fortune' this season are already at their highest point, just two weeks into the game," the official Instagram caption stated.
After losing on "Wheel of Fortune," Sajak's daughter Maggie interviewed her about her experience on the show.
Despite her mom's doubts, Tran won the show and received a trip to Europe and prize money.
Tran shared that it turned out great, although a bit painful, and expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
She continued explaining, "I knew the last two words, but the first one, I couldn't get the syllables."
"By the time it was 10 seconds, I was already feeling frustrated and missed it."
The player's disappointment in missing out on the grand prize on "Wheel of Fortune" was shared by fans who were equally upset. One commentator on Maggie's Instagram video read, "It was heartbreaking to see the million dollar loss tonight."
Another comment read, "Ouch."
"Wow, the combination of the word 'OFF' and the top prize envelope is quite unsettling. Great job, Vivian!" a fan exclaimed.
In October 2021, "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" alum Melissa Joan Hart won the $1 million prize on "Celebrity Wheel of Fortune."
