Kathy Bates reveals she has shed 100 pounds due to difficulty walking.
Bates has lost weight over the past six to seven years and feels as slim as she did in college.
Kathy Bates disclosed that she shed 100 pounds due to her weight impacting her endurance and flexibility.
In a recent interview with Variety, the 76-year-old actress, who is playing attorney Madeline "Matty" Matlock in the CBS reboot of "Matlock," discussed how she managed to cope with the demanding filming schedule that comes with being the lead of a broadcast TV show.
Over the past six or seven years, I have lost 100 pounds, which has greatly helped me, as stated by the "American Horror Story" alum.
Bates remarked, "I believe I haven't been this slender since my college days."
In 2011, when Bates played the lead role of lawyer Harriet "Harry" Korn in the NBC legal comedy drama series "Harry's Law," she reached her heaviest weight.
""I struggled to walk and had to rest frequently, but now I feel great due to my newfound energy," Bates stated."
In a 2019 interview with "Extra," the two-time Academy Award winner revealed how she lost 60 pounds and her family history of diabetes inspired her to shed the extra weight.
"I've been in the best health in years, and I'm so grateful. It's a miracle," she said to the outlet.
"I’m ashamed I let myself get so out of shape, but now I have a tremendous amount of energy." — Kathy Bates
"I was confronted with the possibility of developing diabetes, a condition that runs in my family, and I was determined not to let it control my life."
Her niece gave Bates valuable advice on controlling her appetite.
"According to Bates, after eating for 20-30 minutes, you experience an involuntary sigh, which is a form of communication between the stomach and brain indicating that you are full. By listening to that sigh and pushing the plate away for just five minutes, you can realize that you are satisfied and do not need to eat more."
In a 2019 interview with People, Bates revealed that losing 60 pounds alleviated her lymphedema symptoms, a condition she developed as a result of cancer.
"She informed the outlet that she was feeling great after losing a significant amount of weight, which had greatly improved her symptoms. However, she still needed to wear compression sleeves or take precautions against nicks and bug bites to prevent sepsis."
The Mayo Clinic states that lymphedema is a type of swelling that affects the arms and legs when there is a blockage in the lymphatic system. This condition can result from lymph node removal or cancer treatment.
In 2003, the actress was diagnosed with Stage 1 ovarian cancer, and in 2012, she underwent a double mastectomy to treat breast cancer.
Bates, while speaking with Variety, discussed her six-decade career and how she made her Hollywood breakthrough at the age of 42 with her role as Annie Wilkes in "Misery," which earned her her first Oscar.
She acknowledged that becoming successful in this business would take time because she wasn't naturally attractive.
"Bates stated that he gives an inner wink when he sees former beauty queens who are no longer working due to ageism, and he has been able to continue working for many years because he doesn't look like that. He added that he believes he wouldn't have gotten the role in "Misery" if he had been a beauty queen."
In a recent interview with The New York Times, it seemed that Bates confirmed she would be retiring after starring in "Matlock."
"All the effort I put into achieving my goals, I am now being asked to utilize, but it's overwhelming," she stated.
"This is my last dance."
Bates had been considering semi-retirement before being cast as the lead in "Matlock." Despite this, she may not completely retire from her career.
""My friends predict that I will likely end up like Molière and pass away while seated on stage, as it is a significant part of my existence," she stated."
