'At age 20, Aubrey Plaza, star of 'Parks and Recreation,' experienced an unexplained stroke that left her paralyzed.'
Francis Ford Coppola's new film, 'Megalopolis,' features Plaza as a prominent character.
Aubrey Plaza is recounting the "unexpected" experience of suffering a stroke at a young age.
In a recent interview on Sirius XM's "Howard Stern Show," Plaza revealed that she had a stroke at the age of 20, which left her momentarily paralyzed and unable to speak. The actress stated that the stroke occurred suddenly, stating "It happened mid-sentence."
"She said on the radio show, "I took the train to Astoria to have lunch with my friends and walked into their apartment without taking my jacket off. It was wild.""
She continued: "I was paralyzed for a brief moment, losing my motor skills and forgetting how to speak."
In 2011, during an interview with David Letterman on "The Late Show with David Letterman," the actress revealed that her stroke was a surprising and unexpected event.
The actress was unsure about the cause of her stroke, stating on a talk show that the doctors had varying opinions. Some believed it was due to hormonal imbalances, while others speculated it could be linked to her migraines.
"I lost control of my right arm and looked down at it, thinking, 'Whose arm is that? It's not connected to my body,'" she said. "I passed out and couldn't speak for a few days due to expressive aphasia. My friends thought I was joking because I often made funny jokes, and they told me to stop."
The "Parks and Recreation" star shared how the paramedics suspected she was on drugs due to her young age and a stroke was not their initial concern. She felt scared and unsure if she would regain the ability to speak.
In a 2017 interview with NPR, Plaza disclosed that she experienced mini strokes, known as "transient ischemic attacks," which she referred to as "tiny little strokes."
Two types of strokes exist, according to Brigham and Women's Hospital: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke happens when a blood vessel is blocked, while a hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel leaks or bursts.
"I was paralyzed, but only really for a minute or something. I lost my motor skills really briefly. The freakiest thing was I forgot how to talk." — Aubrey Plaza
Both types of strokes exhibit similar symptoms such as facial and limb weakness, difficulty in speaking, confusion, and intense headaches.
Recently, Plaza has been advertising her upcoming film, "Megalopolis," which features Adam Driver and Shia LaBeouf. The movie portrays an architect with the ability to manipulate time who aims to reconstruct the devastated city of New Rome into an ideal society.
"I was shocked to land an audition with director Francis Ford Coppola, and even more so when I actually got the part. I thought, 'Well, I'll do the meeting, of course,' but I didn't expect to get it."
