The most-attended WNBA game of all time was Caitlin Clark's first season finale, which concluded a historic season.
When playing against Clark, multiple teams have relocated their games to larger venues.
Despite being one of the worst teams in the league, the Washington Mystics drew a record crowd during their season finale against the Indiana Fever.
The Mystics made the advantageous marketing decision of moving the game to a larger venue, Capital One Arena, home to the NBA's Washington Wizards, after Caitlin Clark and the Fever finished the season in Washington D.C. on Thursday.
The Entertainment and Sports Arena, located in Congress Heights, is where Washington typically plays. This residential neighborhood in southeast Washington, D.C. has a capacity of only 4,200.
The Chinatown section of Penn Quarter houses Capital One Arena, which can hold up to 20,356 spectators during basketball games.
Despite having only 13 wins going into the game, the Mystics easily filled the seats with Clark in town.
On Thursday, the 20,711 fans who attended the WNBA regular-season game set a new record for the highest-attended contest, surpassing the previous record of 20,674, which was achieved four times by Washington during the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
The Mystics' home team won over Clark's Fever 92-91, which was a thrilling experience for the fans.
The Las Vegas Aces hosted the Fever at the larger T-Mobile Arena for a July 2 game instead of playing in the relatively smaller Michelob ULTRA Arena. This move resulted in the highest regular-season single-game attendance since 1999, with 20,366 fans showing up.
The Mystics narrowly avoided a one-game suspension for rookie Clark, who was one technical foul away from earning it in the Fevers' most recent game against the Dallas Wings.
After a turnover in the game, Clark walked up the floor and looked up at the replay. She began to argue with the referee. Kelsey Mitchell put out her arm to stop Clark from going to the ref, while Aliyah Boston yelled "No" to prevent her from getting a technical foul.
On Thursday night, Clark avoided a seventh technical foul, allowing her to bring a throng of fans to watch her play in Washington.
The season finale of Clark's record-attended season was a fitting conclusion to a historic season where the rookie broke numerous records.
Clark's performance on Thursday set a new record for most points by a point guard in a single season in WNBA history.
This season, Clark holds the record for the most assists in a single season and is the youngest player to ever lead the league in assists.
This year, Clark was the league leader in 3-pointers and held the second-most record for 3-pointers in a single season with 122.
She set a new record for most All-Star votes among WNBA players and was the first rookie to achieve a triple-double.
The Fever has made it to the playoffs for the first time in eight years due to Clark's attention and performance, and they are one of the most popular teams in the league. All 14 of the most-watched WNBA games this year featured the Fever.
Two of Clark's teammates expressed their view that playing with Clark this year has resulted in a different team vibe and increased visibility.
Kelsey Mitchell, the point guard, stated before the game on Thursday that she believed the public would not be aware of her if not for Clark. She added that she was accustomed to a more reserved approach to her job.
Mitchell stated that without "C squared" (Clark's nickname), people might not recognize him, so he praised Caitlin.
Although she has successfully attracted her own supporters, I find her efforts amusing because I have always been more reserved and low-key. It's fascinating to observe the contrast between my own personality and hers.
Erica Wheeler, the shooting guard, stated that the team has had to become more resilient to criticism due to Clark's presence this season.
Wheeler stated that all they do with Caitlin Clark is have fun, as she never takes anything seriously. He added that she is truly a kid at heart and that they need to be serious only in certain moments. However, most of the time, they are having fun. Wheeler emphasized that the outside world was trying to get inside their building, but they didn't let it.
