A Missouri football fan saved Peter Burns' life in a harrowing story, as recalled by ESPN's Peter Burns.
Four cracked ribs is what Burns claimed he walked away with.
During his show on Monday, ESPN personality Peter Burns became emotional as he remembered the moment a Missouri football fan saved his life by performing CPR on him over the weekend.
During the broadcast, Burns thanked a heroic bystander who jumped in to help him when he experienced a "medical incident" while enjoying dinner with coworkers in Columbia, Missouri, on Friday ahead of Saturday's game between Boston College and Missouri.
During the excitement of the group's conversation and meal, a piece of steak got stuck in Burns' throat.
""As soon as I realized I was choking, it was not just 'OK, I don't feel well,'" he said Monday."
The owner of the restaurant and another person tried to execute the Heimlich maneuver, but they were both unsuccessful.
"Suddenly, I realize the world is collapsing on me as a lady says, "This guy's a nurse." So I rush over to the certified nurse."
Again, it didn’t work.
At that moment, I realized I didn't know if I was going to live. It was about a minute and 45 seconds into this when I started getting blurry-eyed and blacking out. I was thinking, "If this nurse can't do it, what happens?"
Jack Foster, who was dining with his family, intervened and successfully dislodged the stuck food.
Burns emotionally recalled how his life flashed before his eyes, causing him to think about his family and kids and how fortunate he felt in life.
"Over on Friday, Jack Foster saved my life and I want to express my gratitude."
Foster, a youth sports coach, had recently completed CPR training, as stated by Burns.
"Being positive and loving in every moment is the lesson. You never know when something like that will occur," he said.
Burns departed from the encounter with a fresh perspective on existence, as well as four broken ribs.
