Christian Scott, a rookie with the Mets, must undergo special elbow surgery and will not be able to pitch again until 2026.
An internal brace will be used in conjunction with a Tommy John ligament replacement for Scott.
Christian Scott, the New York Mets rookie, will miss the entire 2025 season after undergoing special surgery on his pitching elbow, preventing him from playing in the 2024 campaign's final games.
Scott, who has been attempting to recover from a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm, will receive a combined Tommy John ligament replacement and an internal brace.
Dr. Keith Meister will perform a hybrid procedure next week, which typically requires less recovery time compared to a traditional Tommy John surgery.
According to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, Scott's recovery will extend through the 2025 season, as the regular season ends next week.
""He's done for next year, so we waited until he gave it a try," he said."
Despite not pitching in an MLB game since July 21, Scott was throwing off the mound last month. However, while trying to increase his recovery, he struggled with his off-speed pitches.
"Scott stated that once they reached speeds over 82, 83 mph, it felt the same as before when throwing off-speed pitches. After consulting with the medical staff and other individuals present, they determined that this decision was the best course of action moving forward."
Scott, who was named the Mets' minor league pitcher of the year with a 2.57 ERA, faced a difficult transition after being called up to the big leagues, where he pitched in nine games with a 4.56 ERA in 47.1 innings.
As a pitcher, Scott comprehends that a long road to recovery is part of the job.
"I love competing and doing what I do, and I believe this is the best job in the world. However, it's important to remember that this is what we signed up for. Although it's unfortunate, I will strive to be the best version of myself every day and work towards competing in 2026."
In the 2021 MLB Amateur Draft, the Mets selected Scott as a fifth-round pick, following his impressive performance for the Florida Gators.
