In the Jets' home opener, Aaron Rodgers leads a beatdown of the Patriots.
Since 2015, the Patriots have been defeated at home by the Jets.
The New York Jets' acquisition of Aaron Rodgers resulted in a healthy and dominant performance at home.
The Patriots were defeated by the Jets, 24-3, in the AFC East match, leaving them at 1-2 on the season, while the Jets improved to 2-1.
Although Rodgers did not earn any points with the offense during the Jets' first drive of the game, fans will still consider this a victory due to what happened in Week 1 of the previous season. He suffered an Achilles injury on the fourth snap against the Buffalo Bills, cutting his 2023 season short before it had a chance to begin.
On Thursday night, the four-time MVP appeared spry and confident as he ran around the pocket, surprising many with his ability to take off for first downs.
Despite Jets fans holding their breath every time he had to run outside the pocket, Rodgers looked like his old self all night long and the numbers proved it.
Through the air, Rodgers completed 27 out of 35 attempts for a total of 281 yards, including two touchdown passes and no interceptions, on his best night as a Jet so far.
He scored his first touchdown at MetLife Stadium as a Jet during the team's second drive, using a screen pass to Allen Lazard that gained 10 yards and put the score at 7-0.
The Jets scored a decisive 14-0 lead over their opponents after running back Breece Hall punched it in from the goal line, going a total of 91 yards on 13 plays.
The Patriots’ offense struggled to score points, with their only success coming on a 44-yard field goal by Joey Slye on their third drive. Despite this, the vintage Jets defense was relentless and managed to keep the Patriots from scoring any more points throughout the game.
Since their last home victory against the Patriots in 2015, when Ryan Fitzpatrick was their quarterback, the Jets were determined to defeat their rivals. Rodgers knew how to achieve this on their opening drive of the second half.
Rodgers was outside the pocket, extending plays and killing the clock as he found open receivers for first downs and drove all the way down the field for a first-and-goal look from the two-yard line.
Instead of another Hall run up the gut for the score, Rodgers rolled out right and flicked a pass to Garrett Wilson for the nifty completion and touchdown to make it 21-3. It was the first of what Jets fans hope is many Rodgers-to-Wilson touchdowns at MetLife.
On Thursday night, Tyler Conklin, a veteran tight end who had been quiet in the previous two games, led the way in the receiving game for New York, despite Wilson being their top target on paper.
With a team-high five catches and 93 yards, Conklin helped sustain touchdown drives.
In the run game, the Jets currently have a formidable duo with Hall and rookie Allen, who scored a touchdown last week, becoming the youngest player in the Super Bowl era to do so.
The Jets' defense recorded six sacks on the night, with Will McDonald IV, the team's first-round pick from last year, contributing two of them. This brings the season's total to five sacks, a significant improvement from the three recorded last season.
In the fourth quarter, the Patriots substituted Drake Maye, their No. 3 overall pick, into the game after Brissett had a poor performance with just 98 yards on 12-of-18 passing. Maye went 4-of-8 through the air for 22 yards in his first regular-season game action.
The Jets' impressive performance was highlighted by their ability to limit the Patriots' offense to only 139 yards, while their own offense, led by Rodgers, racked up an impressive 400 yards.
