Schumer and Dems to be urged by GOP to prioritize border bills amidst immigration vigilance.
Devoted border security has been a campaign promise of vulnerable Democrats.
On Wednesday, Republican senators will urge Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to present several border bills for a vote in the Senate, with Vice President Kamala Harris and at-risk Democrats pledging to prioritize border security.
According to Britt's office, Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., will lead a group in advocating for the consideration of several strict bills related to the border, immigration, and cooperation with ICE, including the Laken Riley Act and the WALL Act.
"Vice President Harris has announced that she has changed her policy positions on some of our country's most pressing issues. Britt will address this in remarks on the floor before making unanimous consent requests to advance the bills. Let's see if her own party believes her claims or if they will defend the radical policy positions Vice President Harris has long held and the Biden-Harris Administration has imposed for these past few years."
Sens. Markwayne Mullin, James Lankford, and Mike Lee will join the Alabama senator.
The Laken Riley Act was named after a 22-year-old female college student in Georgia who was found dead on the University of Georgia's campus in February. An illegal immigrant, Jose Ibarra, has been charged with 10 counts following her death and has pleaded not guilty.
The bill proposes that ICE must retain individuals who have been convicted of theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting.
In May, Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., drew attention when he endorsed the bill, even though he had previously blocked a vote on a revised version of it as an amendment to a $1.2 trillion spending bill in March.
The procedural vote was defeated, with Tester voting against it.
In the Montana Senate race, he faces a tough challenge as his opponent, former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy, leads him in new polls and top political analysts predict a Republican advantage in the state.
In the upper chamber, stand-alone votes for bills are becoming increasingly rare, especially when they are priorities of the minority party.
Schumer's office did not confirm to Planet Chronicle Digital whether he would bring any Republican bills, such as the Laken Riley Act or the WALL Act, for votes following Republicans' request. Nevertheless, the majority leader has been reluctant to schedule votes on them, suggesting he has no intention of doing so.
Despite only two Republicans supporting a failed immigration bill that they labeled as "bipartisan," Harris and vulnerable Senate Democrats have used it to bolster their claims of securing the southern border during their campaign.
Lankford, who will share the floor with Britt on Wednesday, was one of the negotiators of the bill, along with Sens. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and Kyrsten Sinema, I-Ariz. In recent floor remarks, he criticized Harris for using the border bill in her campaign. "I mean no disrespect to the Vice President, but we had four months of negotiations, and she neither initiated those negotiations nor participated in a single second of those negotiations — not one second," he stated.
The bill aimed at addressing the southern border crisis has been criticized by several Republican senators, who argued that it would worsen the current situation. Some of these senators who supported parts of the bill also claimed that the administration would not effectively implement them and would use the bill's passage as an excuse not to take further action on the border.
