Trump discloses conversation with Secret Service Director Cheatle about assassination attempt on roof.
Trump expressed surprise over Thomas Matthew Crooks' proximity to the alleged shooting.
On Monday, former President Trump and his 2024 running mate JD Vance were interviewed by Planet Chronicle host Jesse Watters for the first time since the assassination attempt on Vance's life at a rally in Butler, Pa., last week.
In the days after the assassination attempt, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle visited Trump on "Jesse Watters Primetime."
"She was very nice, I thought. However, it would have been better if someone had ensured no one was on the roof," he remarked.
From a building about 130 yards away, Thomas Matthew Crooks fired several shots at the former president.
Michael Difrischia, an eyewitness, recorded the suspects lying on top of the American Glass Research building and aiming an AR-style rifle at Trump.
Difrischia recounted on "The Ingraham Angle" last week how he saw a young child running through the crowd and someone had spoken up, stating that the individual had a gun.
"The issue was that the police officers were too close to the building, so they couldn't see him," he said. "We were trying to convey that he was right there, right there, but they couldn't see him."
Before the shooter fired the shots that grazed Trump's ear, killed former Pennsylvania fire chief Corey Comperatore, and injured David Dutch and James Copenhaven, other eyewitnesses claimed they tried to alert police officers about the danger.
Watters informed Trump that he was astonished by how near Crooks had come.
"They said it's really a bad shot that would usually hit the target. And so I mean, it's got to be somebody there. And it's essentially a flat roof. I noticed that she said, well, this is a slope roof where you think of like a barn where you have this thing had just a little upswing in it, a few degrees. This was not essentially a flat roof," he said.
Cheatle stated to ABC News that the building where the alleged shooter was located had a sloped roof at its highest point. She explained that this safety factor should be taken into consideration when putting someone on a sloped roof.
Trump stated that he believes Cheatle was provided with "inaccurate information" when she cited the building's slope as the reason for the absence of Secret Service agents on the roof.
If there were concerns about a potential threat, the 2024 Republican nominee questioned why he wasn't instructed to remain off the stage for 5-20 minutes prior to his speech.
"Why couldn't I have remained off the stage for five minutes while they worked? How did a situation arise where a visible roof was not seen from the location where I was speaking?" he inquired.
On Monday, Cheatle was present on Capitol Hill to address the security lapses that nearly resulted in the assassination of a former president.
The Secret Service's failure to prevent the assassination attempt on Trump was the most significant in decades, she acknowledged.
Reps. James Comer and Jamie Raskin, both members of the House Oversight Committee, wrote a letter to Cheatle requesting her resignation after her testimony. They claimed that she did not adequately address fundamental questions about the operational failure and did not assure the public that the Secret Service had learned from its mistakes and implemented corrective measures.
Trump commended the bravery of his Secret Service agents for quickly responding to the gunfire at his rally.
"He informed Watters that his ear is healing and improving. However, it was a severe injury. It was severe, to say the least. It was precisely one week ago from today. And, you know, when you consider it, it's - that's a significant amount of ground to cover," he said.
"What a surprise! But it happened, and I was lucky, or maybe it was God's intervention."
