Melania Trump was present at Rosalynn Carter's funeral, according to Hillary Clinton.
Jason Carter, Rosalyn's grandson, urged all first ladies to attend a gathering in the spirit of "unity," as Clinton stated.
On Thursday, Hillary Clinton appeared on "The View" and stated that Melania Trump appeared like a child at Rosalynn Carter's funeral, unsure if she would be accepted.
In her new memoir, Clinton recounted how she was invited to attend Carter's funeral by Carter's grandson, who asked all the first ladies to be present in a show of unity during these divisive times.
Laura Bush, who is absolutely delightful, was talking with Melania Trump and none of us knew she was going to be there. Michelle and Jill Biden and I were in shock, but immediately our training and good manners kicked in. Michelle gave her a hug, Jill expressed her happiness to see her, and I greeted her. I wrote about how I thought it was a positive thing for her to show up.
Co-host Sunny Hostin said it must have been "scary" for Trump.
Clinton remarked, "I felt a bit scared. I wondered if she resembled the child outside the birthday party, as if I would be accepted and belong there."
"The View" co-hosts also praised Melania for going to the event.
In her new book, "Something Lost, Something Gained," Clinton described seeing Melania in a similar manner.
Clinton described Melania's expression as "very smiley but uncertain," reminiscent of a child at a birthday party who is unsure and waiting for people to be kind.
Clinton acknowledged the awkwardness of the situation.
Clinton remarked that Jason Carter referred to the first ladies as a "sisterhood of presidential wives," which prompted her to reflect on her own experience as first lady.
Melania is planning to release a new memoir detailing her experience as first lady, which she claims is her "perspective" and "the truth."
"Due to my private nature and the frequent misrepresentation of me in the public eye, I feel a responsibility to set the record straight. I believe it is crucial to share my perspective: The truth," she stated in the trailer for her memoir on social media.
