A Democratic campaign operative who volunteered at the Democratic National Convention last month has announced that she is leaving the party, citing disenchantment with Democratic leadership.

In a Newsweek op-ed published Tuesday, Evan Barker revealed how she went from raising "tens of millions of dollars" for Democrats to distancing herself from a party she now believes is "totally out of touch" with everyday Americans.

Barker was initially thrilled to volunteer at the DNC, where Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the nomination for president.

While surrounded by the glamour and luxury, I couldn't help but feel a sense of emptiness. The atmosphere was filled with superficiality and insincerity, and I was overwhelmed by the disconnect from the real world and the struggles of everyday Americans. Instead, the wealthy elite celebrated their privilege and exclaimed, "We're not going back," as if they were immune to the challenges faced by the rest of us.

Feeling disenchanted, lost, sad, and alone, she admitted that as someone who has devoted her life to Democratic politics, it was a devastating realization. However, she acknowledged that it wasn't entirely unexpected.

Barker, who grew up in a blue-collar union family near Kansas City, was far removed from the glamour and wealth she encountered in Democratic politics.

"Today, many of my family members who were once Democrats no longer feel connected to the party. They feel that it has changed and left them behind," she wrote. "At the DNC, I couldn't help but think about my family. Every time the elites chanted 'We're not going back,' what I heard was, 'We're not going back to the party your union family members used to vote for.'"

Over time, Barker's dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party grew, culminating in her disappointment with the convention.

"When I went to the DNC last month, I was hoping to be re-inspired and feel the same love for the party I felt as a teenager when I campaigned for Barack Obama. However, the DNC was where it finally hit me: I can't unsee what I've seen, and I can only move forward."

Barker, a Democratic fundraising consultant for Senate and House candidates, revealed that she learned the art of catering to high-profile donors for large contributions, exchanging money for influence in government.

Donors often have specific policy concerns that do not align with the needs of their communities, and Democrats frequently criticize the influence of wealthy donors like the Koch brothers and Elon Musk on politics, but they rarely address the billionaires who support their party.

Initially, I believed the system was faulty. However, I now understand that it is functioning as intended, which is to prevent working-class individuals from having equal representation. This is a deliberate design, not an error.

While the GOP may also be involved, "Democrats are more hypocritical about the issue."

"The Democrats have become the party of war by adopting Bush-era foreign policy, despite their neoliberal trade policies harming working-class communities. Instead of rebuilding these communities, they have spent $175 billion on the war in Ukraine. To top it all off, Vice President Kamala Harris has proudly endorsed Dick Cheney."

"The Democratic Party has strayed from its path entirely, focusing on catering to the college-educated, urban, and affluent voters through condescending and paternalistic language. They prioritize giving away benefits, such as student loan forgiveness plans, to their base, while ignoring the majority of the country without a four-year degree. Despite this, they offer no concrete plans for meaningful reform."

Neither the DNC nor the Harris campaign responded to Planet Chronicle Digital's inquiry for comment.
