The Washington Post editorial board acknowledges that Biden's inner circle intentionally hid his decline.
Biden's slippage behind the scenes: Wall Street Journal pre-debate article
On Tuesday, the Washington Post editorial board acknowledged that President Biden's "inner circle" had been working to hide his decline, leading to his decision to step down under intense party pressure last month.
Despite longstanding criticism from critics that he was not mentally fit to serve another term, President Biden ran for re-election. However, after a poor debate performance against former President Trump, Democratic leaders pressured him to step aside. Throughout the process, Biden and his White House officials maintained that he was still sharp.
The editorial board praised Biden's willingness to surrender power and added a long-held suspicion of White House critics.
In the fourth paragraph, the Post editorial board acknowledged: "The 81-year-old had displayed indications of deterioration for an extended period, but his inner circle made efforts to conceal his decline."
The editorial board stated that if Mr. Biden had kept his implied promise to be a "transitional" figure and bowed out after the Democrats' surprising performance in the 2022 midterm elections, both he and the country would have been better off.
The Wall Street Journal report about Biden's alleged slip-ups behind closed doors was largely dismissed by the mainstream media until the disastrous debate brought up concerns about his fitness for office.
The White House reacted strongly to the report and urged Democrats to challenge the newspaper's reporters on the president's mental health.
On June 9, left-wing Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin, a devoted supporter of Biden and the Democratic Party, criticized a Wall Street Journal article as "shoddy" and maintained that the president was still capable of leading, only to reveal six weeks later that he had dropped out of the race.
The White House declined to comment on Planet Chronicle Digital's request.
Aaron Blake, a senior reporter at The Washington Post, wrote before the debate that the Wall Street Journal article sparked a new wave of criticism about the coverage of President Biden's age. He also mentioned that Democrats have questioned why Trump does not face the same scrutiny for his advanced age.
After the debate, many high-profile Democrats and mainstream media outlets called for Biden to step aside, while conservatives observed the same individuals who previously dismissed concerns about facing Trump now wanting a new candidate.
After Biden decided not to run for re-election, the Democratic Party swiftly united behind Vice President Kamala Harris as their presidential candidate.
