The Onion's joke has caused grief among some X users, with one commenting, "Evil ghouls, delete this,"
The Onion faced criticism from social media users after posting a satirical article about the assassination attempt on former President Trump that resulted in one death at his rally in Pennsylvania in July.
The satire site mocked Trump's mid-debate statement that people don't leave his rallies by saying, "They’re carried out in body bags," referring to the death of Pennsylvania firefighter Joey Comperatore, who was killed by the stray rounds that missed the former president at the fateful rally.
X users missed the humor of the post.
"You are shameful. This is wicked," Libs of TikTok wrote as a prominent conservative activist.
The Onion published a satirical fact-check of an exchange between Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump during the presidential debate, where Harris mocked Trump by stating that people frequently leave his rallies early.
Trump responded to her criticism by emphasizing the size of his rally attendees.
The Onion parodied the back-and-forth with a satirical fact-check. Its account stated, "FACT CHECK TRUMP: 'People don’t leave my rallies.' FALSE: They're carried out in body bags."
Besides Comperatore's death, two other rallygoers were injured in the assassination attempt. Trump escaped harm as a round from suspect Thomas Crooks' AR-15 hit him in the ear, narrowly missing his skull.
The Onion was criticized by other accounts for using humor to ridicule the tragedy and mock Trump.
Brittany Hughes, MRCTV's Managing Editor, responded to the post with a comment that read, "Making light of a deceased firefighter with a loving family to gain approval. Thoughtful."
Robby Starbuck, a conservative filmmaker and commentator, instructed The Onion to remove the article, stating that it was causing distress to those mourning the deaths of the individuals in question.
Stephen Miller, a contributing editor at The Spectator, posted a sarcastic comment, saying, "It's amusing that an innocent person was killed during an assassination attempt on Trump, the intended target."
Kyle Mann, editor-in-chief of "The Babylon Bee," responded to The Onion, saying, "The joke is that a fireman was killed for supporting Trump. Do you understand now?"
"Is this a joke about assassination?" inquired the conservative account "EducatëdHillbilly".
Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment from The Onion was not immediately responded to.
