The New York Times concedes that Harris supports funding for migrant sex changes in a fact-check ruling that Trump's claim "needs context."
The paper acknowledged that the "most outlandish statement" from Tuesday's debate was "largely accurate."
The New York Times acknowledged that an explosive attack against Vice President Kamala Harris was largely accurate after conducting a fact-check stating that former President Trump's assertion "requires clarification."
Trump criticized his liberal opponent after CNN reported that Harris backed taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries for undocumented immigrants in custody, as per a 2019 ACLU survey she completed as a presidential candidate.
During Tuesday's presidential debate, Trump stated that he now wants to perform transgender operations on illegal aliens who are incarcerated.
During the live coverage of the debate, Sheryl Gay Stolberg of The New York Times provided a fact-check, determining that Trump's claim "needs context."
Stolberg wrote that Harris said she supported using taxpayer funds to provide gender-affirming care to transgender and nonbinary people, including those in immigration detention and prison.
Stolberg criticized CNN's reporting on the vice president's stance on LGBTQ+ issues, stating that it drew criticism from supporters of the community. Later, a Harris campaign spokesman distanced the vice president from her far-left stance on the issue, stating that the questionnaire was not what she was proposing or running on.
The "This needs context" label used by The Times was mocked by conservative critics online when it supported Trump, rather than marking it as true.
The context is that it's literally her position.
Greg Price, a conservative digital strategist, also posted, "Trump: 'She wants to do transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison.' NYT: 'This needs context.' The context: 'Oh yeah she actually supported that.'"
The Times article acknowledged the validity of Trump's comment, stating it was the "wildest sounding attack line that was basically true" in a report on the political showdown the next day.
Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment from The Times was not immediately responded to.
The widespread rejection of Trump's attack on Harris was prompted by the legacy media. Time magazine was compelled to rectify their statement that his claim was "false."
The original version of the story incorrectly portrayed Donald Trump's statement that Kamala Harris supported "transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison" as false. In 2019, as a presidential candidate, Harris responded to a questionnaire and indicated that she supported taxpayer-funded gender transition treatment for detained immigrants.
Susan Glasser, a New Yorker staff writer, wrote in a post-debate column that Vice President Mike Pence's statement about transgender operations on illegal aliens in prison was particularly memorable. However, no one knows what he was referring to, which was precisely Harris's point.
Ali Breland of The Atlantic mocked Trump's claim, stating that it was a phrase that ChatGPT would generate if given right-wing posts and instructed to imitate them.
Breland's article was updated to admit that Harris actually told the ACLU she wanted to provide transgender surgeries for illegal migrants, despite initially accusing Trump of falsely suggesting it.
