The host of CNN believes that the controversy surrounding Tim Walz' 1995 DUI arrest is more significant than the allegations of 'stolen valor' against him.
In 2006, Walz's congressional campaign staff stated that he was not intoxicated but was experiencing hearing impairment.
The 1995 DUI arrest of Vice President Harris' running mate, Tim Walz, is a significant concern that the campaign must address.
He stated that the DUI story was unjustifiable and later inquired about Walz's thorough vetting by the Harris campaign.
Despite his efforts to minimize the significance of his drunk driving arrest in the mid-90s, Walz's past legal troubles persist as a source of scrutiny.
In 1995, while teaching in Nebraska, Walz was stopped for speeding at 96 mph in a 55-mph area.
In 2006, Walz's campaign for Congress in Minnesota's 1st District denied that he was drunk and attributed a "misunderstanding" with police to his "deafness," which his campaign manager claimed had been "surgically corrected."
"Smerconish rejected the assertion that Walz's DUI was linked to his "hearing disability.""
"Ultimately, it's about the top of the ticket. However, to me, the DUI is larger than the stolen valor allegation, not because of the drinking but because of the lie," he stated.
Some former Army National Guard members who served with Walz have criticized him for leaving the Guard before it was deployed to Iraq.
Smerconish advised the Harris campaign to confront the controversy surrounding Walz's 1995 DUI representation head-on.
"Smerconish questioned the thoroughness of Harris' campaign's knowledge about Walz's past legal issues, suggesting that the expedited nature of her ascendancy as a candidate may have been a factor."
A state trooper's report obtained by Alpha News contradicts Walz's claims that his DUI was related to his "deafness" during campaigns.
According to the report, a strong smell of alcohol was detected from Mr. Walz's breath and body. The trooper stated that Walz took both a field sobriety test and a preliminary breath test, which he failed.
"Walz should not have represented a role that he had as a permanent role when it wasn't, as he spoke sloppily," he said.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from the Harris campaign when requested for a comment.
