The diminishing California Republican Party is being blamed for the state's issues, according to an LA Times columnist.
Since 2011, California has been governed by Democrats.
The Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez contended that California Republicans are partially responsible for the current issues of poverty, homelessness, and crime in the state.
Despite Lopez's acknowledgement that Democrats "deserved to be on the hot seat" due to their control in all statewide offices, he pointed out that this did not occur overnight or solely under Democratic leadership.
Lopez wrote on Saturday that for many years, both Democratic and Republican leaders in California have made a mistake by not constructing enough housing to meet the demand of the large number of people who moved to the state to take advantage of its growing economy. This oversight has contributed to the current rise in home prices and homelessness.
The GOP was more directly blamed for crime and illegal immigration by him due to its support for gun rights and the agriculture industry.
"Lopez wrote that many people come to California for work in the agri-business industry, which supports GOP lawmakers through campaign checks, while others come to escape violence in Mexico, where a significant portion of guns used in the country are sourced from the US. However, it is hypocritical to criticize California's public safety record when the nation has experienced mass shootings, including those at shopping malls and schools, with no impact on the gun lobby's influence over GOP lawmakers."
He too condemned the GOP for rejecting to broaden their support and regain control in California to tackle these issues.
The GOP has been determined to shrink its tent despite being in a state that values inclusion and leads the opposition to race-based scapegoating, climate change denial, and the restriction of women's reproductive rights. Reagan, who signed an abortion rights bill as governor and an immigrant amnesty bill as president, would not be welcomed in today's GOP.
The GOP has not presented effective solutions to complex issues, and the party's resurgence may be impossible due to the decline in voter registration among white voters. It is understandable that Democrats are not responsible for this.
Since 2011, California has not had a Republican governor.
