The comedian hosting the upcoming Golden Globes promises to speak honestly like Ricky Gervais, but may face backlash.
Glaser remembered past hosts who "spoke what we all didn't realize we needed to hear."
The 82nd Golden Globes ceremony will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who has been criticized for her previous hosting stints.
In recent years, the hosts of the Golden Globes have been criticized for their controversial behavior rather than their humor. In 2023, American comedian Jerrod Carmichael made headlines for his argument that he was there because he was Black. In 2024, Jo Koy's jokes were met with disapproval from Hollywood stars and the media, with Vanity Fair describing it as a "near-total disaster."
It seems that changes are being made to the course for next year's show.
"Glaser expressed his excitement about hosting the Golden Globes in a statement reported by The Hollywood Reporter. He stated that it is one of his favorite nights of television and now he gets a front row seat (actually, he thinks he has to host from the stage). The Golden Globes is not only a huge night for TV and film but also for comedy. It's one of the few times that show business not only allows but encourages itself to be lovingly mocked (at least he hopes so). It's an exciting, yet challenging gig because it's live, unpredictable and in front of Hollywood's biggest stars (who also might be getting wasted while seated next to their recent exes)."
The comedian, renowned for roasting celebrities, pledged to uphold the legacy of popular past hosts.
"My favorite jokes of all time have come from past Golden Globes opening monologues by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, or Ricky Gervais, who said exactly what we all didn't know we desperately needed to hear. I hope to continue in that time-honored tradition (that might also get me canceled). This is truly a dream job. Plus, I no longer have to feel guilty for every TV show and movie I've binged over the past year. It was all worth it. (Below Deck: Sailing Yacht Season Four will be nominated, right?)"
In 2020, comedian Ricky Gervais, who has hosted the ceremony 5 times previously, gained notoriety for his scathing speech where he accused celebrities of being hypocrites.
"You claim to be aware, but your employers in China, including Apple, Amazon, and Disney, are hard to believe. If ISIS launched a streaming service, wouldn't you contact your agent?" he remarked.
Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes, highlighted Glaser as a top pick for the event, promising a captivating evening.
Nikki Glaser is a comedic powerhouse whose daring and unfiltered humor is the perfect match for the Golden Globes. She is sure to bring a unique energy and spontaneity to the show that will keep the audience entertained all night.
Jay Penske, chairman and CEO of Dick Clark Productions and Penske Media Corporation stated that Glaser's "unapologetic style made her an obvious and compelling choice as host for this year's event." He added, "We're hopeful this could be the first of many Golden Globes that Nikki will surprise and delight our CBS audience, as well as our audiences around the globe."
