Report: Michelle Obama expresses dissatisfaction with Joe Biden regarding the handling of Hunter's ex-wife's treatment.
The Biden family is not related to the Obama family, despite the White House's denial of a report stating otherwise.
A new report reveals that Michelle Obama's private frustration with the Bidens over the treatment of her friend Kathleen Buhle after her divorce from Hunter Biden has made her hesitant to publicly support the president's campaign.
Buhle and the former first lady became friends while the latter's husband was in office and Joe Biden was his vice president. Since then, they have remained close. However, their relationship was strained after Hunter Biden and Buhle separated in 2015 and divorced in 2017. In her memoir "If We Break," Buhle wrote about how his addictions and infidelity fractured their marriage. After their split, Buhle was largely exiled from the family, according to an Axios report.
The report stated that the Biden family was unhappy with Buhle's book, despite it being published a year after Hunter Biden's 2021 memoir "Beautiful Things," which focused on his addiction struggles.
In 2017, Axios reported that former President Obama attended a fundraiser for the Beau Biden Foundation in Wilmington, Delaware. At the time, Hunter Biden was dating his late brother's widow, Hallie Biden. A source who spoke to Axios claimed that Obama described the situation as "weird s--t," although he has since denied making such a statement.
Michelle Obama privately believes that Buhle was wronged after the collapse of their marriage, and she has not been as visible on the campaign trail for President Biden as he faces his re-election battle against former President Trump. Despite this, she actively works with a voter registration group.
Michelle Obama was initially reluctant to campaign for Biden when he first ran in 2020, but eventually spoke at the Democratic National Convention. Despite the reported frostiness in their relationship, there are discussions about her joining the campaign trail to stump for Biden. Michelle Obama's approval ratings have been generally high, and she's widely viewed as a strong political force by Democrats.
Despite remaining politically united, Obama and Biden's relationship shifted in 2015 when Obama advised Biden not to run for president, paving the way for Clinton's eventual nomination.
The Obama campaign emphasized that their decision to run for president in 2016 was partly driven by concern for Joe Biden's well-being, as he was still grieving the loss of his son Beau that year.
The White House responded to the Axios report with a statement to Planet Chronicle Digital.
"President Biden and his family have a close relationship with the Obamas, and anyone who claims otherwise is not familiar with it, according to spokesman Andrew Bates. The Obamas have been strong supporters of President Biden's leadership and agenda."
Michelle Obama's spokesperson confirmed to Planet Chronicle Digital that First Lady Jill Biden attended the memorial service for Obama's mother, Marian Robinson, this week.
"Crystal Carson, the communications director for the former First Lady, stated that Mrs. Obama has expressed her support for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign. Additionally, she mentioned that Mrs. Obama is friends with Kathleen and the Bidens. It is important to note that two things can be true. On Monday, Dr. Biden joined the family to celebrate the life of Mrs. Marian Robinson."
Planet Chronicle Digital reached out to Buhle for comment.
