Pelosi pushes back on Tapper's questions about tension with Biden, claiming he made her ask.
The former speaker stated that their concern was not with the president himself, but rather with his campaign.
During the Democratic National Convention on Monday, Nancy Pelosi, the former House Speaker from California, was questioned about the ongoing animosity between her and President Biden following his decision to withdraw his nomination.
Biden announced last month that he would not run for president in 2024 and endorsed Vice President Harris for the Democratic ticket. This decision came after several weeks of defections from Democratic lawmakers who urged him to withdraw from the race following his poor performance in the presidential debate. Some reported that Pelosi played a role in pushing Biden to step down.
During the first night of the DNC, Jake Tapper of CNN interviewed Pelosi about any remaining animosity between Biden and his supporters towards her.
"Tapper stated that it was evidently difficult for him, as his top aides, Anita Dunn and Ron Klain, had made it clear. Despite Anita Dunn's earlier statement that nobody wanted to fight with Nancy Pelosi at the moment, there seemed to be some residual bad blood or resentment. Tapper wondered if he had spoken to him and what his response was to this."
Pelosi joked in response to the news host, saying, "Sometimes you just have to take a punch for the children."
Pelosi spoke to Biden about Dunn's comments, according to Tapper.
"Pelosi gestured to stop and said, "You know what? I had to do what I had to do. The president made the decision for the country. My concern was not about the president, it was about his campaign. As he has seen with the exuberance and excitement that has come forth in our country.""
Tapper stated that there is no doubt that the Democratic Party is currently in a better position than it was 4 weeks and 2 days ago.
"So why are we even talking about it?" Pelosi asked.
He replied, "They included it in my script and had me read it."
"Okay, Ron Burgundy," co-host Dana Bash laughed.
Tapper joked, "They’re holding my cat hostage."
