Officials in Chicago deny the cleanup of a homeless encampment with migrants prior to the upcoming DNC.
Chicago officials prepare for a possible influx of migrants following Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's promise to transport them across the U.S. southern border.
The DNC is not connected to the cleanup of homeless encampments with migrants in Chicago, according to the city council.
On July 17, the Chicago Tribune reported that a massive homeless camp was dismantled.
The managing deputy commissioner of the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services, Maura McCauley, stated that the effort was expedited in order to be completed before the Democratic National Convention in late August.
According to the Tribune, security officials with the convention may have concerns about evacuating the tent city.
According to reports, the department's effort was not related to the convention, as stated by spokesman Brian Berg.
The DNC is not the reason for the encampment initiative, according to Mayor Brandon Johnson.
As city officials prepare for a possible increase in migrants, the mayor's remarks coincide with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's pledge at the Republican National Convention to continue transporting migrants from the southern border to sanctuary cities.
In two years, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has sent about 46,000 migrants to the city via buses, in an effort to challenge the liberal cities' welcoming messages, according to the Tribune.
As more migrants headed towards Chicago, city officials held a meeting to discuss managing the influx.
The "encampment initiative" in Chicago involved clearing an encampment, which was one of eight tent cities in the city.
Migrants occupied spaces near a Chicago police station with encampments.
An encampment cleanup initiative was discussed with the Tribune by a migrant who witnessed it.
Jordan Parra revealed to the paper that he did not travel across seven countries to be evicted from his tent in a park in Chicago. Instead of staying in shelters for safety reasons, Parra opted to reside in one of the encampments.
Johnson's office declined to comment on the matter when contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital.
The United Center will host the Democratic National Convention from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22.
The city approved $70 million in April to support illegal immigrants, which Johnson saw as preparation for Abbott's plan to transfer migrants to the city.
