New York Times podcast reports that the honeymoon phase for Vice President Kamala Harris has ended, with a "wave of euphoria" fading after a new poll.
A recent Times/Sienna poll revealed that voters are still undecided on Harris's vision for the country.
The New York Times' podcast has acknowledged what many Kamala Harris supporters have feared since she first declared her candidacy: the initial enthusiasm sparked by her late entry into the presidential race has seemingly dissipated.
The latest New York Times/Siena poll shows former President Trump leading Vice President Harris by one percentage point among likely voters nationwide, according to "The Daily" episode titled "The Harris Honeymoon is Over."
According to New York Times chief political analyst Nate Cohn, the polls findings indicate a dire outlook for Harris' campaign.
Sabrina Tavernise, the host of "The Daily," stated that there is a possibility that the poll indicates that the honeymoon period has ended, and the momentum has shifted, with Trump now in the lead.
"Cohn concurred, stating that her return to Earth was evident since the initial euphoria surrounding her candidacy had dissipated."
Recent polling suggests that the public wants to know more about Harris and her policies, but she continues to avoid formal press briefings and engagement with the media.
Cohn stated that the poll indicates that although the initial euphoria has waned, the public still desires more information about Kamala Harris, which she has not yet provided, resulting in some negative impact among certain critical groups.
Among the "traditional Democratic constituencies," such as young, Black, and Latino voters, Harris has failed to meet their expectations.
Our poll reveals that a significant portion of voters in those cases feel they have not yet learned enough about Kamala Harris and require more information before feeling comfortable with her.
While the poll doesn't necessarily indicate an "extraordinarily deep problem" for the Harris campaign, it does show that she hasn't made the sale yet among those key voting blocs.
Despite gaining support from some dissatisfied Democrat voters, it appears that Trump's growing strength with White working class and older voters is still outweighing Harris's support, at least for now.
Cohn believes that Harris' poor polling is due to her inability to convince voters of her ability to bring about change.
Voters desire significant change from Joe Biden, with a majority expressing dissatisfaction with the country's direction. Despite Kamala Harris's efforts, this group is not yet convinced that she provides a solution to their concerns.
"At present, when Americans are discontented and seeking change, it seems that Donald Trump has a significant edge over Kamala Harris in embodying a significant departure from the norm."
Cohn stated that the poll indicates that some voters believe Harris shares similarities with Biden and holds her responsible for the current state of the country. However, Tavernise advised the Harris campaign to maintain a distance from Biden.
Kamala Harris has the potential to win over young, Black, and Latino voters who are typically less politically engaged than other demographics, according to Cohn.
Tavernise stated that some key voters claim they are not well-informed about her, but it's not surprising since she has not disclosed any policy positions. However, the poll suggests that this is not resonating with people.
A Times/Siena poll released on Sunday showed that Trump received 48% of likely voters' support, while 47% supported Harris. Despite the increased enthusiasm for the Democratic ticket after Harris assumed the role of vice president, the New York Times noted that Trump's support seems to be "remarkably resilient" to the shifting election landscape.
Despite the poll showing that 28% of respondents need to know more about Harris to support her, only 9% have similar concerns about Trump.
While the poll's news wasn't entirely positive for Harris, it showed that 91% of Democrats were enthusiastic about voting, and 85% of Republicans indicated the same.
