MSNBC host becomes enraged upon viewing polls indicating Trump's lead, labels Electoral College a "suicide pact."
Chris Hayes described the Electoral College as an institution that poses a significant threat to democracy.
MSNBC host Chris Hayes expressed anger over new poll results indicating that former President Trump is the leading candidate to win the Electoral College and secure the presidency in November.
On his X account Friday, Chris Hayes criticized recent polls by Nate Silver indicating that Harris would likely win the national popular vote against Trump if the election were held today, despite Trump's victory in the Electoral College.
Hayes wrote, "The Electoral College is a national suicide pact, as Justice Jackson famously said."
In 1949, Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson warned that the court would turn the Bill of Rights into a "suicide pact" if it didn't balance its "doctrine logic with a little practical wisdom."
Hayes suggested that the U.S.'s commitment to the Electoral College system, which progressive Democratic lawmakers believe is outdated, will inevitably lead to the disaster of Trump being reelected as President.
Hayes expressed frustration over Silver's latest election model, which was shared by finance journalist "Geiger Capital" on X on Thursday.
The X account stated that Trump is now the favorite in Nate Silver's election model, with a 52% chance of winning, while Harris is favored in the popular vote but an Electoral College underdog, with a 47% chance of winning. This is largely due to Pennsylvania, where she passed on Josh Shapiro for VP.
Hayes criticized the Electoral College as a "dangerous institution" that "undermines democracy" and creates "Rube Goldberg machinery" for bad actors to attack.
The host responded, adding that if the Electoral College were not in the Constitution, it would be unconstitutional and the right-wing went crazy over it, calling the host a "dumbass."
Hayes defended Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's criticism of the Electoral College as a "scam" by arguing that the system is "outdated" and that Republicans maintain it out of fear of being in the minority.
