Liberal commentator urges Harris to distance herself from 'toxic' Biden: 'A hindrance' to her political aspirations.
Jonathan Chait contends that Harris is not to blame for Biden's unpopular policies.
Vice President Kamala Harris was urged by liberal New York Magazine columnist Jonathan Chait to disavow President Biden's "unpopular" policies.
During Tuesday's debate, Democrats discussed the challenge Kamala Harris faces in positioning herself as a "change" candidate while remaining loyal to Biden and his current administration, which she is a part of, as cited in a New York Times article.
Instead of prioritizing loyalty to Biden while also meeting the needs of the voters, Harris should solely focus on satisfying the public, without considering Biden's preferences.
Chait claimed that by not challenging Biden's unpopular policies, Harris was dragging down her own candidacy.
Biden has been consistently unpopular since early in his administration, making him a liability for Harris, according to the argument.
"While Chait acknowledged that there are instances where Biden has adopted a popular stance or accomplished something successful, this does not necessarily mean that Harris must take responsibility for every action Biden has taken."
Over 60% of voters desire a significant shift from Biden as the next president, but only 25% believe Harris would embody such a change.
Chait argued that Democrats should not be bewildered by Biden's "toxicity" to voters due to the economy, as he deserved credit for managing inflation. He urged them not to let this confusion cloud their judgment and force Harris to support Biden's policies.
If Biden has an unpopular stance, Harris should simply oppose it. However, if she disagrees with some of Biden's positions on fiscal management and immigration enforcement, she can say she supported them because she was a good soldier. Alternatively, if she didn't disagree with any Biden decisions at the time, she is free to say that she disagrees with them now and wants to go in a different direction.
Harris is not responsible for Biden's actions because she lacks constitutional power, which allows her to distance herself from him.
The Biden administration's policies and "failures" should not overshadow Kamala Harris' role as the incumbent vice president, according to the Trump campaign.
"According to Karoline Leavitt, the national press secretary for Trump 2024, Kamala Harris is not the candidate of change or the future. Instead, she is the Vice President of the United States and fully responsible for the failures of the past four years."
Biden has always had confidence in Harris's leadership and ability to succeed, which is why he endorsed her immediately and rejected other divisive strategies.

With President Biden out of the race, Harris has narrowed the gap with Trump and increased her approval ratings.
The upcoming debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday between the two candidates is expected to be crucial in determining the outcome of the race, as the latest polls indicate a close contest between them.
Since August, the gap between Harris and Trump among registered voters has narrowed from 3 points to 1 point, with Harris leading 49% to 48%, according to an NPR/PBS News/Marist National Poll released Tuesday morning.
